Two puzzles.

Post by MJMcCready » Wed May 12, 2021 9:29 am

I have to admit I was stumped by both, just not able to think outside the box I guess.

On the left, white to mate without making a move!
On the right, mate in a quarter of a move!
Please post the solutions if you have found them ( I know I couldn't).

In the first, how about Black has just played ,,,d4-d5+ and White says he has to take it back? Hope it's right, I hadn't seen it before.

Yes, white recaptures with en passant, winning the game. The second one is hard and relates to a move which (technically) has four parts.

There is a clue in the position I think.

Thye second one must be completing 0-0-0. K up, K down, R up..... R down.

I see that idea now, but shouldn't it be White wins in a third of a move, by analogy with the second puzzle?

My solution was more imaginative, I thought. Black has played an illegal move and is simply told to retract it.

Yes, that's the quoted answer. Not easy at first.
