It was advertised on Facebook:

Maybe those with Facebook accounts can tell us more?
(It is probably a different Max that was the Oxford Union challenger, but it all reminded me of this:

No, he didn't beat Carlsen!)

Yes, my brother is studying at Oxford currently so I know a little more. At some point it was announced that Magnus was going to give a talk at the Oxford Union and that he would be playing a bullet game against someone from the university during the talk. The Oxford University Chess Club therefore had a bullet tournament to decide who would play Magnus which Max French won (https://lichess.org/tournament/zJ3l24pe). As for the game against Magnus I can't find it currently, I'll ask some people. I believe to actually watch the talk you had to be a member of the Oxford Union which is quite expensive.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:35 amDoes anyone know any more about this?

Re: Magnus Carlsen @ Oxford Union
Thanks, Peter. FWIW, Max French has a FIDE rating of 2248, so a "valiant fight" does sound like it would be of interest. We can't have games by Carlsen not being preserved for posterity!
(I should have recognised the name: Max French, ex-Millfield and studying mathematics at Oxford. He has also represented England as a junior at World and European Championships.)

Max was my last OTB opponent (4th March 2020, Wells vs Sedgemoor)! He is a good and inventive player, and whenever I've seen him he's been a really pleasant individual, which is not always the case in chess matches...
