Re: Simultaneous Displays
Bobby spent Christmas 1961 in London but didn't play any chess.
But he did set foot in the UK, and for longer than Elvis!

Spassky gave a simul in Glasgow on 25 Sept, 1987. Sponsored by the Sunday Mail.
The participants were prizewinners from all sections of the Glasgow Congress.

I lost - everybody did, that was the point. He was particularly brutal to the last man standing. My abiding memory is of a City journalist who was totally plastered and wisecracked loudly throughout his game, testing the Champion's sense of humour.
Not one of my best games, but not a total embarrassment either. I find to my surprise that it has survived.

Spassky must have played simuls here when Len Barden was running the junior squads...?!

"lest we forget....."
I hadn't forgotten the radio game (and must have listened to it.) I think the book "Chess Treasury of the Air"(?) by Terence Tiller(?) covered it.
I had forgotten the simul, and was pleased to see I have played 11 of the players at some stage without challenging Spassky's score.

Hem! Conveniently forgetting, it would seem, how Bob Wade got sandbagged in Moscow in 1951 .....Martin Benjamin wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 11:52 amThere's a clip on YouTube of Kasparov mouthing off at one simul organiser because someone too strong is playing on one of the boards.

Re: Simultaneous Displays
The list of juniors in the simul against Spassky (that Len Barden organised) was indeed formidable. The newspaper cutting lists 18 of the 30 juniors who took part - Hodgson, Flear, R. Holmes, Neil Dickinson, Gary Lane (who all won), Short, Cummings, W. Watson, Nick Benjamin, Danny King, Malcolm Pein, Gary Clark, J. Pitcher, T. Peterson, Arkell, Simon Brown, Peter Wells and P. Sullivan ( who all drew)
Of those 18, 7 eventually became GM's and 3 are now IM's and the only one I dont recall is P. Sullivan.
I was going to ask if it was thought that England could now put together a junior simultaneous team, that could take on, say, Magnus Carlsen, which would be as formidable as that team, but of course, this can only be judged in hindsight ! My guess is no ! But I don't actually know all the top juniors who are around now.

I don't think I know Clark, Pitcher, Peterson or Holmes either.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Gary Clark plays for Charlton and is about 210 now. I think Richard Holmes gave up but he was 210-220 standard. Tony Peterson runs the website chessbooks.co.uk specialising in rare books and J Pitcher plays 4NCL for some team in the Midlands, and it appeared to me that he nearly always takes the Black pieces - and does really well! ( I think !)

My apologies, Leonard. I had forgotten your consultation match, in which I'm sure you did most of the heavy lifting!

Re: Simultaneous Displays
I played Peter Sullivan 3 times between 1986 and 1991, 2 of which were Civil Service League, but I cannot remember which department he was. In another CS League match, I got a slightly lucky draw against (Commander) John Allain and (Constable) Gary Clark harangued him at length about how badly he'd handled the position. I could see JA was getting grumpier than usual, so said,
"Careful Gary, you'll be counting traffic cones for the next month!"
"Huh, I'm more or less doing that already."
