Alistair,
Thinking about it there is a way to get to your formulation, by placing 2 balls in slots and thinking about the possibilities. So balls in slots A and B gives 4 left, A and C, 3 left and so on.

Yes, that is how I was thinking of the problem - I just couldn't count.
