I can certainly see that Karpov was less entertaining than Fischer. More sane? Clearly.

But higher in the genius stakes? I will have to agree to disagree with Magnus there, but I suppose he knows better than me.

I think it was Lasker who said he had known many chess players, but only one chess genius: Capablanca.

He wasn't a bad judge.
Bit harsh to rule out everyone post 1941 (at the latest) on that basis though...

He probably wanted to give him a 10 for entertainment, but knew he couldn’t get away with that so added a couple of points for genius as compensation.

I believe tomorrow Carlsen assesses Kasparov.

For what it's worth I'll give my markings for Kasparov:

Genius: 8
Entertainment: 9
Influence: 8
Sanity: 7

Should people really be giving marks out of ten for sanity though
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Agreed, it clearly should be insanity.

I agree that sanity is a very strange category, but I just went with the flow.

Morphy and Fisher are so similar genius at the board but sadly ended with serious medical conditions. Morphy could remember word for word over 800 pages when becoming a lawyer but everyone remember him as a chess player which effected him the rest of his life. Would have been the 1st World Champion. Teaching anyone how to play chess just show his games.

I think we can certainly say that Fischer was a genius.
Why is Fischer more of a genius than Alekhine, Botvinnik or Karpov?

We have the Alekhine opening, you can play in the style of Botvinnik. Can I play the Fischer opening or play in the style of Fischer?
well We Have fisher timings on the clock I think that is more of an influence than any one opening and you could argue that the exchange variation of the Spanish was made really popular by fisher remember he thrashed Larsen who was 3rd best in the world 6.0 now that is a genius can you imagine Carlsen beating Liren Ding or Nepomniachtci by that kind of score no doubt in my mind that Fisher was a genius mad but a genius

It may be that the terms "mad" and "genius" both serve to obscure more than to illuminate
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
