Caplin Hastings All-Play-All

Post by Matthew Turner » Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:31 am

It is the Caplin Hastings All-Play-All this weekend. Play starts at 1pm each day, with 6 rounds on Saturday and 5 rounds on Sunday.
It is a great initiative and you can support it just by watching the games.

Simon Williams and Jovanka Houska will be doing a great commentary here https://www.twitch.tv/gingergm and as an added bonus you have the prospect of seeing us all suffering at home on our zoom links.

There is already one piece of news from the tournament that is even more important than the Caplin sponsorship or the impressive field of players.

Alex has now recovered sufficiently to re-join the control team. :D

"Glenn Fleer"?

Should be a great event. Good luck everybody, but especially the Somerset contingent!

And well done Caplin and organizers.

Oops! I F(l)ear I made a mistake. (Thanks David. My health may be improving but my humour isn't.)

Note that the Chess-Results link will not reflect the correct places in the draw until later tonight (which is why I didn't link to it).

This promises to be an entertaining contest in the long tradition of Hastings Chess. The sponsor, Caplin Systems, is a fintech specialist in e-trading technology so this seems a very appropriate link between the sponsor and the event. Caplin has open positions in a number of departments and people seeking a career change are encouraged to look at www.caplin.com/business/careers.

Further information will appear on the Hastings website www.hastingschess.com

The one below - from the rules of the tournament itself is a good one -

"1.8 All players agree to play 11 meaningful games of chess in order to achieve the best placing they can in the final results table, in the full spirit of the game and the FIDE laws of chess. Failure to do so may result in the Chief Arbiter deciding that all or part of the players fee or prize money be withheld. The Chief Arbiter’s decision will be final."

I see from the pairings above that Ghasi immediately gets another go at Adams!?

An interesting rule. I hope some guidelines will have been given to the players as to what that entails. Does playing a line as White which forces a repetition count as a 'meaningful game'? Does it matter if this happens after 12 moves say or 25, if it's all theoretically known? Not seeking to cause trouble, I'm genuinely interested. It's a pretty common tactic for a lower-rated player to use the threat of a repetition to 'force' an inferior line.

Oh, and good luck to all the players involved. It's nice to see such a strong Hastings event again, even if only online.
