Alex McFarlane is on the mend.

Post by Geoff Chandler » Tue Nov 24, 2020 2:19 pm

From Lara on FaceBook

"For all those who have been sending good wishes and moral support for Alex McFarlane, the good news is
that he is starting to get better. It will be a long haul yet but he is cheery and thankful."

Lara

Apparently it is or hopefully very soon was, Sepsis.

The home page just has room to describe this thread as "Alex McFarlane is on the ..."

My mind reeled with all the possibilities for ending that sentence.

I guess "mend" may be the best of them. Please convey my best wishes, Geoff.

Pleased and relieved, best wishes from me
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

He sent two emails yesterday to other members of the Hastings International Chess Congress Committee.

He might even appear on here before too long.

However, he is under strict instructions from Lara to take a break from arbiting duties.

Thanks for the kind wishes.

There is a considerable way still to go

I'm hoping to be out of hospital in the next few weeks but things are complicated still. However, the improvement in the last week or so has been amazing.

Can I thank Lara (at an especially difficult time), David Sedgwick and Alex Holowczak for doing the Welsh FA Seminar, Shohreh Bakak and Hal Bond for continuing the Indian Seminar without me and to the FIDE Education Team for taking over the delivery of the FIDE Lecturers' Seminars.

Hopefully, I should be active again early in the New Year.

Thanks also to Andy Howie for lending me a computer when mine failed!

Emergency food parcels to Monklands Hospital!! (Kidding!!!)

Alex, you have made my day. It's great to hear from you and predictions which I make on here are not often proved right four minutes later.

There is a typo in your post: "Shohreh Bakak" should be "Shohreh Bayat".

I have also heard from Shohreh, who has teamed up with Lara to enforce the latter's instructions.

Great to hear from you Alex.
I will always remember the time a few years ago at Scarborough Chess Congress when I had won a grading prize. When you called my name, you pronounced my club as Poolton rather than Poulton.
Although I could never pronounce Crianlarich for you.

See viewtopic.php?f=27&t=7915&start=570 for Alex's own comments on this theme.

It's good to see you are getting better, Alex. See you at Hastings, some year or other ...

Hi Simon,

I'll pop onto facebook after messing about here and making a few moves on Red Hot Pawn.

See if I can get an update. Hopefully it is a case of no news is good news.
