From today's cryptic crossword in the i:-

Knowing quality of knight captured in game by a rook (8)

I decided pretty quickly that the answer probably started with AR, and that I was looking for a five-letter game to put the N in to go after it, for a word that meant "knowing quality". I have to admit none sprang to mind, and even when I considered that the answer might end in NESS it took a second or two.

I concluded it would be "exchange" as in "exchange sacrifice". The local equivalent of "quality" is the word used for an exchange sacrifice in several European languages. Those who recall the TV Show "The Master Game" may recall Hort and other East Europeans describing moves in this way.

From today's Times; "Willing to support objective when mate approaches (7)". Quite easy if you know there's a chess connection.

Maybe the clue should have 'perhaps' added; mate can approach in the opening and middlegame too.

Yesterday we had
See pawn and a bishop boxed in with nowhere to move (5-1-5)
I solved it when I had _ _ _ _K/_/_ _ _ _K

You need a colloquial synonym of 'see' to parse it correctly.

Yesterday's Sunday Times:
Leave a crossroads and transfer from A2 to A3? (4, 4, 4)
MAKE ONE'S MOVE

I didn't much like the definition, but the upper case chess notation grated more. I spent too long thinking of the size of paper.

I don't think the partial solution was there when I first posted, particularly as the introduction (still) says "We reprint the puzzle here, without the solution (which we will add at the end of the match)."

For a moment I thought today's Times had two; "When mate's most likely to kill grouse (7)" and "Reportedly sounded like rook, maybe bothered with tail (7)".

The second clue is hard, I needed --U-A-E to solve.
