Double Check and Mate

Post by Simon Rogers » Fri Oct 09, 2020 3:41 pm

I've been going through some of my games recently and I have found this game where my final move was a double check as well as mate.
The previous move, I sacrificed my Queen with the only check of the game.
Here it is:
Blackpool and Fylde Chess League 20/02/14
Division A Morecambe 1 v Poulton 1
White: Simon Rogers 140 Black: Nick Jameson 134
1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d3 Nc6 4.Nf3 Bc5 5.Bb3 d6 6.c3 h6 7.Nbd2 O-O 8.O-O Qe7 9.Re1 Bg4 10.h3 Bh5 11.Nf1 Rad8
12.Ng3 Bg6 13.Nh4 Bh7 14.Nhf5 Qd7 15.Qf3 Bxf5
16.Nxf5 Nh7 17.Qg3 g5 18.h4 Kh8 19.Nxh6 gxh4
20.Qxh4 f6 21.g3 Rde8 22.Kg2 Nd8 23.Rh1 c6
24.Nf5 Ne6 25.Bh6 Rfg8 26.Qxf6+ Nxf6 27.Bg7# Mate

Has anyone else had a game where the last move was a double check and mate?

Using CQL (Chess Query Language) you may search chess databases for various themes etc

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Query_Language

I've used it when compiling the "Spot the Continuation" column for British Chess Magazine between 2011 and 2015.

'Even the laziest king flees wildly in the face of a double check.' Nimzovich.

ChessBase has a search for double check. Just did it.

I have played dozens of them but only one double check and mate and that was a net game.

I had sacced the exchange to keep the King in the centre, rather than win it back with Nxh8.

19.Bd6+ Kg8 20.Nh6 ++ and mate.

The only one I can find in my database of my games (the variations seem fairly random - not serious analysis):

I think this is the only one I have had, but at least the double check was performed by a pawn capture:

White actually resigned after Qg2+. My opponent was very obliging towards the end, so it looks a bit like a helpmate.

I remember losing a game, a number of years ago, at the Scarborough Chess Congress where the last move my opponent played was double check and mate.
I could've resigned a few moves earlier, however, I allowed my opponent to play it, which he thanked me for.

Hi Simon,

I have often had to explain to the punters at chessgames, com who howl with disgust if someone gets mated.

"Players sometimes let it happen as a sign of respect 'well played' it's called being a good sportsman. "
I too, if it's a 'good un' let it happen.

A famous example of this sportsmanship is Byrne letting it go to mate v Fischer in the Game of the Century.

Did you see the 'Byrne' suddenly I cannot remember which Byrne, D.or R. don't tell me, I'll it look it up.
( I yanked chess historians chains I cannot even remember who played in this famous game. What a fanny I am sometimes.)

Tbf part of the confusion is that *both* Byrne brothers lost an "immortal" game (with White) to Fischer.

Hi Matt,

I could have multi-tasked, 'Game of the Century' was top google hit 'Donald.' Just surprised I could not recall it right away.
Must be an age thing. Also pity that game did not have a double check mate then I could stayed on topic.

(wonder why Fischer left it out his M60MG's.)

I think some of Fischer's best or memorable earlier games had already been published, thus M60MG starts with the Sherwin game. I seem to recall something about that in the preface.

Roger is right. The relevant passage reads: "An interested reader will find 34 of my earlier efforts in Bobby Fischer's Games Of Chess (Simon and Schuster, 1959)." A pre-Internet example of providing a link!
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

Hi John,

I have seen the first Fischer book. (think the Edinburgh actually has two copies)
I thought the D.(!) Byrne game would have made 'Memorable' as well.

The title 'Game of the Century' from Kmoch. When you read the original article it actually means the
best game (of that century) played by a child prodigy.

(pic from Edward Winter site)

Trying to get it back on topic I could find no Fischer Double Check Mate.

But it does bring me onto my one of the questions I give my juniors.

Q: What is the only thing that every piece (including the King) and pawn can do that a Queen cannot.

A: It can never be the piece moving to give a discovered check.
(note this does apply to double-check - a King can move to give a discovered check, but not a double check.)

No Fischer game with a double checkmate, looked at Kasparov and found a doubler of a double check and mate.

Nigel - Gary, Blitz 2015.

Both 38..Ne1 and 38...Ne5 are double checkmate

I'd like to report Gary lost on time deciding which one to play but no. He played 38...Ne5++#
