Pedants United really appreciate that vocative comma in 'Cheque, mate'. It's an essential ingredient in a hilarious punchline.

Clearly not correct; that accolade belongs to one or more of the British tabloid media outlets.

I don't know for certain (and somebody in the know please correct me), but if someone offered "Cheque, mate." as a method of payment at Chess & Bridge: The London Chess Centre then they might be (politely) told where to go. Alternatively, this might indicate that the joke is quite old (well over ten years).
