Games with no captures

Post by Reg Clucas » Thu Jul 30, 2020 7:56 pm

There was a thread a while ago about the longest game without any piece being captured, but I can't find it. Anyway, in today's final round of the Georgian women's championship, the game Arabidze-Gvetadze was drawn in 62 moves without any captures.

Decisive games with no captures are rarer, but they do exist.

(not including here Fool's Mate and similar kiddie tournament trifles)

Ah come on, Matt, this just isn't fair. Get us excited and then not deliver the goods? Come on, give us a game!

I think Short & Nakamura came close in the London Chess Classic one year. Think it was a Lenningrad Dutch, and position seemed closed the whole game.

You may be thinking of this, which is not a Leningrad nor a Dutch and had its first capture on move 30 out of 90

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

This is/was the classic no capture game, won in a major international tournament by a world title candidate.

Even more unusually, no captures *or* checks with that one.
