I hope they're not overdosing on these, or possibly worse, judging by the reviews.
I was surprised by your comment, so I checked the reviews myself. The first is 95% 5* or 4*, the second only 90%. Doesn't sound so bad.

Get your jabs.
That at least is something I would hope everyone here could agree on.

(still waiting for mine btw)
Actually not, I've ducked mine.
I doubt very much it will get you to change your mind, but for the record that goes against all expert medical opinion and we'd be in a right old mess if everybody took that approach. I don't think that is a good decision.

The first one is 10 times the NHS recommended daily dose.

For the second one, it's not entirely clear what the dose is. The description and packaging isn't clear. The seller claims they're 5000 IU in their answer to a question, 12.5 times the NHS recommended daily dose. Would you risk taking them after reading the 1* reviews?

But they won't, so the only effect of my action is that I exchange my place in the queue with you or Matt and we are all happier as a result. In some communities that is still considered a good thing.

I know nothing about the products, but do you ever see anything that doesn't get a tiny number of 1* reviews? They just seem to come with the territory.

I'm with you Nick, I am not taking the second one.

Think because I had or still have long covid this jag has made it even longer.
I'm sure it has made me ill just so it has something to cure.

My natural immune system which has fought everything this planet could throw at me for 69½
orbits of sun has been undermined. This is what I get for trusting the Tories and scientists.

It will either mutate into something nothing can stop or mutate itself harmless.
(if it mutates harmless we will be told to not wear masks and blow through old peoples letter boxes.)

I'm not a hypochondriac, though my gynaecologist thinks I am.

Of course freedom of choice is important, but here we might have a problem. Consider a simple model where we have lockdown or return to normal, there are no kind of grey areas.
The R rate of coronavirus is about 3 in normal times. If vaccines are 90 or 95% effective (I am using this as a catch all term to describe risk of death, hospitalisation or transmission) then you can leave people to choose if and when to have the vaccine and you should be able to return to normal. People will still die, as they do with seasonal flu but it won't get out of control.
However, if effectiveness drops to 70% you need to have the whole population vaccinated to be able to return to normal whilst keeping outbreaks under control.
It is obviously much more efficient to vaccinate the whole population in a systematic way rather inviting people to come in and them declining or leaving them to make an appointment when they feel like it.

Geoff,
We appreciate your light-hearted zany interludes, but I think all medical experts would advise you to get the second jab. As I understand it, the jab might not help if you have a pre-existing coronavirus condition, but it won't make it worse, so it is a no lose option. However, I am no medical expert, so find out the facts from your gynaecologist, I am sure they will be more than happy to help.

Hi Mathew,

I'm not so sure about these medical experts.

I reckon these medical experts give advice to make people ill.
What good are they when people are not ill?
If nobody got ill there would be no need for hospitals and they would
all be out of job and have to work in call centres or drive a bus.

Experts?

ChessBase has an chappie whose name sends my spellchecker into fits of laughter.
He is proudly proclaimed as being an endgame expert. ( he can work a tablebase.)

What on earth is an endgame expert. What about his openings and middlegame?
Would you want him in your team? He would keep getting mated within the first
15 moves of any opening, which is a phase of the game he, apparently, is not an expert in.

What kind of chess set does this endgame expert have in his house,
a couple of Kings, a handful of pawns, two Rooks and that's it.

Medical Experts...No Thank You.

I get my medical advice on Facebook from a housewife in Surrey called Mabel.

Sadly all this Anti-Vaccination stuff will result in people dying:
....from the disease itself.
....& delayed medical treatment for other conditions.

There has recently been stockpiling of the 2 currently available vaccines to ensure that there are enough doses of the correct vaccine to give as second jabs, so it would be frustrating if people didn't get the 2nd jab

One of the vaccine centres near Liverpool was shut for 5 days because of lack of supply, so that's delayed the first dose for a lot of people (the smaller centres operate on a "push" system, where they get told how much vaccine they have, and can only make appointments accordingly; the pharmacies and larger centres operate on a "pull" system, where they get sent as much vaccine as they have patients to give it to; I spoke with someone in south Manchester yesterday whose GP told him they didn't know when he could have the jab, so got him to book at the Etihad, the large Manchester hub, where he has appointments for both his first and second jab)

Leaving aside the rather nasty totalitarian overtones, that was not the view of my GP. She agreed that it was up to me to decide on the balance of risks ( her term ), although her advice was that this favoured immediate vaccination. She also said that it would not be at all inconvenient for the practice if I were to request vaccination later this year, and that it might then be possible for them to offer a choice of vaccine, which is not the case at present.

Let us make a wild assumption that OTB League chess might resume in October 2021.

Would anyone who has decided not to receive a vaccination be offended if a chess venue required them to show proof of vaccination before they were permitted to enter?

You are making a couple of assumptions there. The first being that such a certificate of vaccination would exist and secondly that it would be legal to require its production in order to enter premises. Let's also note that the vaccines are not yet approved for under 18s.

I expect it will be 2022 before any public building will allow entry without "Social Distancing or Masks"
....making events like OTB Chess difficult if not impossible.
