Another OTB tournament that's just been played, with each player using their own board.
Definitely a stretch to reach the clock, probably requiring the player to half stand up. No-one wearing face masks.

I'll be keeping an eye on this blog in just over a week's time to see what playing OTB chess is like now.

Interesting article on what the Irish Chess Union intend to do at the forthcoming Irish Championship.

This was cited by Tim Wall and Malcolm Pein at the ECF Council meeting on Saturday. Kudos to the Irish Chess Union for their efforts but I'd like to ask some questions:Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 10:31 amInteresting article on what the Irish Chess Union intend to do at the forthcoming Irish Championship.
- Why shouldn't face coverings be required throughout the venue and not only at the board;
- What protection do the screens provide which face masks don't;
- What ventilation is there within the playing area; and
- What regulations and/or guidance are the organisers following?

Presumably so you can get some relief by taking the wretched thing off between moves. You may also do so while your opponent is away from the board, so like-minded players could arrange to be unencumbered for most of the game.Angus French wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 1:53 pm- Why shouldn't face coverings be required throughout the venue and not only at the board;

We'll have a large outdoor area as part of the playing area where players can remove masks. You can also have respite from your mask while your opponent is away from the board.Angus French wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 1:53 pmThis was cited by Tim Wall and Malcolm Pein at the ECF Council meeting on Saturday. Players suggested they wanted the screens for additional protection.
Well ventilated as per the link provided. 250 sq meter room for 36 players, lots of large windows.
We drew up our own guidelines based on government guidelines at the time, compared them to the ECU guidelines at the time, floated them by players for their level of comfort, and then published them. FIDE published their guidelines at around the same time and our guidelines mostly aligned. We offer the additional distancing option, with extended clock levers and two boards. We've been in contact with those who've used the two board option around Europe and they seem to have gone mostly smoothly but will make some announcements about what to watch out for when using them (apparently there is an urge to press your clock after you've made your opponent's move on your board).

Yes, this is certainly something for which you will have to watch out.John McMorrow wrote: ↑Tue Jul 21, 2020 4:52 pm... apparently there is an urge to press your clock after you've made your opponent's move on your board.
Sighted players often do this when playing blind players, until they have got used to the procedure. Their blind opponents know to listen for the sound of a clock being pressed shortly after they have announced a move.

Guilty as charged, David. Another fault is to make your own move, press the clock and then announce it to your opponent Probably doesn't make so much difference but it is very irritating for the blind player.

Mr Melsom: I've not been on this forum long, so I apologise if I am treading on anyone's toes, but is it really necessary to post this?J T Melsom wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 10:26 amTim Spanton who is currently on your ignore list, made this post.

It feels a little rude, and surely rather defeats the purpose of an ignore list if you go out of your way to respond to their posts specifically.

If someone chooses not to read what are usually interesting posts that's their loss.
