Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
The momentum seems positive, although with cases much higher than the national average in Bolton and Blackburn, there must be a bit of a risk of Lancashire ending up in some sort local lockdown. Curious events in the most vaccinated nation in the world, the Seychelles. A recent surge in cases have led to another unexpected lockdown; https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/12/busi ... pharm.html

The Chinese vaccine has a relatively lower protection than alternatives. That may explain the surge.

We don't have anything like full information, but the Sinovac success rate would seem to be extraordinarily low in the Seychelles. We may never know.Wadih Khoury wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 12:00 pmThe Chinese vaccine has a relatively lower protection than alternatives. That may explain the surge.

A Reuters report of yesterday said that, based on a large trial by the WHO, the Sinopharm vaccine provided greater protection than that advertised for the AstraZenica vaccine.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 12:06 pmWe don't have anything like full information, but the Sinovac success rate would seem to be extraordinarily low in the Seychelles. Reuters report wrote:The WHO has said a large Phase III trial of Sinopharm has shown that two doses, administered at an interval of 21 days, have an efficacy of 79% against symptomatic infection, 14 or more days after the second dose. AstraZeneca said its March its COVID-19 vaccine was 76% effective.

But apparently not in the Seychelles, that is the puzzle.

Clearly there are going to be a lot of organisers shouting across rooms as of Monday.Simon Rogers wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 8:02 pmThere are a number of Chess clubs opening up from after next Monday which I'll gradually share.
"My group of 6 is down to 5 and I have no-one to play, can I change group?"
"No, stay there and play winner stays on!"
"They've just started a 20 minute game"
"Tell them to play 5 minutes instead"
"..."
"Can you show us how to set these clocks to 5 minutes?"

It's not looking good in parts of Lancashire as regards to increases in covid infections.

Despite having an appointment, I spent nearly 2 hours yesterday queuing (fortunately in the sunshine) outside a vaccine centre (where I had played chess about 40 years ago); anyway, 2nd jab done now
They were doing walk-ins and most of these seemed to be students, including 1 in school uniform; not sure if this is a Bolton thing

They are two different vaccines: Sinopharm ≠ SinovacNickFaulks wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 12:59 pmBut apparently not in the Seychelles, that is the puzzle.

There is no "ban", she has however advised people not to go there.

A somewhat worrying development for the return of OTB chess

It has been clear for a long time that this is going to be a feature of modern life in Britain and we shall have to get used to it.Matthew Turner wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 8:11 amA somewhat worrying development for the return of OTB chess

Yes, not great being told I shouldn't have been leaving Bolton since 14 May (still I've only been to Buckshaw Village, Blackburn, Preston, Lostock Hall, Chorley Hospital and Preston again on or after 14 May)
