Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
I should point out that Paul's wording includes "ENTRIES ONLY FROM CLUB MEMBERS" (his capitals, not mine) before people who are not members of Hastings & St Leonard's start emailing him. I hope the event is a success, compliments to Paul and his club for organising it and I hope it encourages other clubs and organisers to take a similar approach.

How much is membership? Some clubs offer temporary membership to guests...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
For those itching for some standard games, there is still my tournament in Oxford next week (sat+sun), 9 places left before reaching capacity (6 round, 60+30, ECF and FIDE rated)
There are light and hopefully sensible measures:
* masks recommended but not mandatory when playing
* hand gel available
* no handshakes
* masks only mandatory when moving inside the building
* 3 to 4 distinct groups with each their own playing room (each room should have maximum 12 players)
* each bubble has its own waiting room(s) in between rounds with plenty of space
* open windows/doors
* socialising recommended to be done outside
* pairings available online and in the hall
So hopefully enough measures to please players on both side of the divide while keeping reasonably safe.

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
I have just received my 20th entry so that's it, short of any layout tweaks. I run three or four of these events each year in 'normal times', when entries are usually c 16; to have reached 20 with a week to go shows an appetite, or maybe it's the free entry (I would normally charge £3-£5).Martin Benjamin wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 10:34 amI should point out that Paul's wording includes "ENTRIES ONLY FROM CLUB MEMBERS" (his capitals, not mine) before people who are not members of Hastings & St Leonard's start emailing him. Fourteen adult entries, five juniors, and one to check on. I have some small private knowledge of people's vaccination status and/or COVID-sensitivity but nothing formal.
Note to Jack Rudd: you can get a later train by changing at Brighton but it'd be a slog. Note to Nick Faulks: there is no last bus, there is no first bus - National Express have not yet reinstated our one service a day.

I would have entered, but this week I found a nine-rounder (Wrocław) in a country unlikely to suddenly impose new covid sanctions on the UK

It isn't their Government you have to worry about, it's your own, but I wish you well and shall follow your progress.Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 7:12 pmI would have entered, but this week I found a nine-rounder (Wrocław) in a country unlikely to suddenly impose new covid sanctions on the UK

Thanks: yes, I knew about the pronunciation, but the Ryanair steward on landing said: "Welcome to rock-law."Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 10:55 pm"I would have entered, but this week I found a nine-rounder (Wrocław) in a country unlikely to suddenly impose new covid sanctions on the UK"

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
Well, I don't think it's sensible for wearing of masks not to be mandatory when playing. If an unmasked player is infectious then not only will the player's opponent be at risk but so will everyone else in the same playing area. This is because the virus is airborne and transmitted through aerosols. Even vaccinated people will be at risk although the risk is significantly reduced. Key paper published in the Lancet here. Excellent series of short and informative animations about making indoor spaces safe here.Wadih Khoury wrote: ↑Sat Jul 31, 2021 11:24 amFor those itching for some standard games, there is still my tournament in Oxford next week (sat+sun), 9 places left before reaching capacity (6 round, 60+30, ECF and FIDE rated)

Would you say the same about a pub or restaurant?Angus French wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 7:56 pmWell, I don't think it's sensible for wearing of masks not to be mandatory when playing.

Well, of course, it would be difficult to wear a mask when downing a pint or eating. But in principle, yes. That said, I suspect that in general ventilation will be better in pubs and restaurants than in chess venues. But to offset this there is likely to be lots of talking and that will release a greater number of aerosols.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 8:11 pmWould you say the same about a pub or restaurant?Angus French wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 7:56 pmWell, I don't think it's sensible for wearing of masks not to be mandatory when playing.

Do you think we should be wearing masks for the rest of our chess playing lives? If not, then at what point do you consider the risk low enough to dispense with them?Angus French wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 7:56 pmWell, I don't think it's sensible for wearing of masks not to be mandatory when playing. "I acknowledge I was wrong on what was going to happen."
Your heroine Professor Christina Pagel yesterday.
Admittedly that is a selective quotation. She hasn't given up yet.
