Re: Chess Book Collections
That's the one John. Thanks.
I think yours is the 1980 First Edition.
A very good book, where I started to learn about the titans of chess.

It's just that people are having a go at me on this forum like Justin and David it is upsetting me a lot.
I don't want to fall out with anyone on the forum.

Justin has had a go at literally everyone at some point (and I say that as somebody who thinks his posts here do far more good than harm)
I wouldn't let that at least worry you too much.

I have apologised to Simon on another thread for singling out him in relation to Stewart Reuben.

Re: Chess Book Collections
The third chess book my parents bought for me was:
Steve Davis Plays Chess
by Steve Davis and David Norwood
Steve Davis was my favourite snooker player. I think Steve Davis was from Romford, where I was born myself.
He also played chess at Brentwood Chess Club for a while and coincidentally I lived in Brentwood before moving up to Lancashire.
I remember David Norwood was part of the BBC2 commentary team for the World Chess Championship between Nigel Short and Gary Kasparov.

Re: Chess Book Collections
For some reason, I have two copies of the book:
Ultimate Dragon Volume Two
by Eduard Gufeld & Oleg Stetsko
I don't even play the dragon. I play the Scheveningen.
I don't know how or when I acquired these books.

Re: Chess Book Collections
There are books in my collection that I have bought in the past, not realising I had them already. I'm sure I am not the only person guilty of this.
The books are:
The Big Book of Busts by Watson & Schiller.
Ultimate Dragon: Volume Two by Eduard Gufeld & Oleg Stetsko.
1....b6 move by move by Cyrus Lakdawala.
The Times Winning Moves by Raymond Keene & Byron Jacobs 2003 Edition.
Chess Choice Challenge 2 by Chris Ward.
Planning by Neil McDonald.
The Power Chess Program: Book 1 by Nigel Davies.

Re: Chess Book Collections
When I moved in 1998, albeit to a much larger home, I got rid of a number of chess books. Now I am contemplating down-sizing. The ECF won't want more copies of ones they already have, but no longer want. Any suggestions?
I am also in the process of dealing with my cds.

Re: Chess Book Collections
I too have doublers and even triplers.
Some I buy on purpose. The Burgess books, the Mammoth Book of Chess and Mammoth book of Greatest games
I often see for 50p or in 4 for a £1.00 shops. I pass them onto the kids. The first one is very good, the second also.
Leonard's Guardian book is also another I always buy, must have bought about 15-20 over the years and passed it on.
Funnily enough (just looked) I do not have one - or I cannot find it, although during lock down I put every chess book
on the bed and put them back on the bookshelves into categories.....I have dozen of bloody openings books (6 on the ending
and two of those are in a foreign language - Russian and German - why? I've no idea.)

Re: Chess Book Collections
That is a great point - there are books I always buy if I see them on sale, no matter whether I have a copy already! A non-chess example is The Dangerous Book for Boys - this is such a great present for kids (and actually adults) and it's usually in good condition, and cheap.Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 5:34 pmI too have doublers and even triplers.

Re: Chess Book Collections
In Somerset we are lucky enough to have the "Book Barn", which readers will be amazed to hear is a converted barn, with large numbers of books for sale, many very inexpensive. They do have an antiquarian section, which is more expensive.
I spent 50 p on a partially filled scorebook. The owner didn't bother to put his/her name in it and I haven't heard of any opponents. At some stage, I intend to put the games on Chessbase, and try and work out who the player was.
