Plus it really gives very little incentive for our up and coming young IMs to make that final push to GM if they see the UK tournament scene treating them like some sort of parasites leeching money instead of the reverence that such a title demands from lesser players.
Reverence? LOL. I invite England's 30-somethingth GM, whoever that may be, to look around at all the spectators who have bought tickets to watch them play - is that not reverence enough?

I actually agree that reverence is perhaps too strong a word. Respect is maybe not undue, though.

Danny Gormally posted his earnings on Twitter for the last year as £12,993. I suspect that is probably below the tax threshold. I’m not sure if that suggests becoming the next GM kind of only works if you have a giant support network around you soothing out the financial difficulties.

You could probably scrape by supplimented with a part time job (ideally doing some sort of teaching so you can double up your training with work) but it does seem like full time tournament only GMs are becoming a very rare breed outside of the world elite and even most of them seem to have side hustles to bring in extra income.

You can make a good living from online coaching as a GM. It's hard to combine it with playing as who wants to work on their own game after teaching chess for 30 hours?
Danny has said previously that he simply doesn't like it.

I think Danny’s income already contains a fair bit of coaching revenue, with the likes of Zoe Varney. It would be interesting to hear how other pros get on in the UK.

I would be very surprised if many GMs make a good living online when there is so much competition for coaching from every other level of master right down to CMs and NMs - I guess a few students can boast that they have a grand master as a teacher but there must be hundreds who opt for the cheap or even free options of learning.

The annual fees on Ravi Hari’s public school education was in the ballpark of double Danny Gormally’s income, which might put the support network aspect a bit in perspective. There was a heck of a lot of £100+ an hour GM coaching with the likes of Simon Williams year on, year out. (Plus obviously a great deal of talent and determination it goes without saying.) And now he’s got the reward! I’d think Lohia Sohum’s parents are thinking along the same lines. Aren’t they so rich they used to have GM Jonathan Hawkins travelling with them to events before they upgraded from even that level of coaching?

The player's name is Sohum Lohia (first name, surname).

A year or so ago, Sohum was being coached by Jonathan Pein. With all due respect to Jonny P, that isn't an obvious upgrade from Jonathan Hawkins.

GM Ramachandran Ramesh was Tweeting on the 1st of December about his student. So maybe they've gone for multi-coaches!

Former Reading player James Adair as well although he would need to gain 56 rating points.

How often do people become GMs in their thirties these days?
