Ginger GM Collection Sale
A few people said they wished they had taken advantage of this last time - so posting here, just noticed it's on again

That's all of the DVDs for £45 I believe.

Sounds a very good offer.
I know someone at our club who is a big fan of Simon Williams and might be interested.
I have the DVDs Crash Test Chess 1 and Crash Test Chess 2, which I thought were both excellent.

To bring this up to date, most of the Ginger GM DVDs are currently on sale for a fiver at Chess and Bridge, although you will obviously have to pay postage,

I wouldn't trust the analysis on some of the earlier ones, when I think of the grading points I’ve lost trying to play that Winawer - Ginger GM says we have a good attacking game here and the computer gives me a position the equivalent of a piece down Harry the H pawn can F right off.
They did get better though, I'm quite interested in the new one on the English but price is an obstacle...

Simon Williams is a great chess teacher. I've seen some of his You Tube videos and enjoyed his game against Lancashire's Martyn Hamer.

Yeah don't get me wrong I like Simon, his blitz death match with Ben Finegold was really entertaining. There's one part where Simon draws or looses an ending 3 pawns up and Ben goes "And remember Ginger GM's DVD's on the endgame are available now from his website!"Simon Rogers wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 10:13 amSimon Williams is a great chess teacher. For my part, I find Simon's style a bit wearing, but I know a lot players like him. Incidentally, Chess and Bridge have still got a load of Ginger GM DVDs at a fiver and they are certainly worth a look. Ivan Sokolov on Middlegame Pawn Structures is a great buy at that price and he doesn't find it necessary to mention Harry the H pawn once,

Re: Ginger GM Collection Sale
I downloaded the Jobova London System course from Ginger GM as I've heard good things, very interesting stuff. I kind of wish I hadn't done it to be honest, I'm trying to get out of playing these hacky 1.d4 sidelines - spent years playing the Colle-Zuke / Barry Attack / 150 Attack, with very mixed results in the latter 2 (the Colle-Zuke is great if you are allowed into it, very hard to loose). I've been trying to train myself to get into some proper 1.d4 2.c4 main lines, but I can tell this is going to get whipped out on Chess.com quite a lot now.
Supposedly the Killer Tromp with Julian Hodgson is out in a couple of weeks, I've never really considered playing the opening (especially after 1.d4 d5) but might be worth a look too.

i wonder whether it will recommend taking on f6 when allowed. That went out of fashion in the mid 1990s for a while and my personal experience was that after a while it become tiresome with the White pieces rarely to have a bishop pair and be later vulnerable to Black's domination of the dark squares. That said, perhaps 1. d4 d5 2. Bf4 is preferable to 1. d4 d5 2. Bg5 .Jon Mahony wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 10:00 amSupposedly the Killer Tromp with Julian Hodgson is out in a couple of weeks, I've never really considered playing the opening (especially after 1.d4 d5) but might be worth a look too.
You used to get people seeking to avoid the Tromp. I had a game that started 1. d4 c5 2. d5 when my opponent avoided 2. .. Nf6 for fear that the reply would be 3. Bg5

I have never understood why 1...g6 is not a more popular reply to 1.b3. The "refutation" is presumably 2.Bb2, Nf6 3.Bxf6, but then you have the same position as after 1.d4, Nf6 2.Bg5, g6 3.Bxf6 ( what else? ), but having played a pawn to b3 instead of d4. How does that help?

1.b3 g6 2.Bb2 Nf6 3.Bxf6 is already objectively =+.
However as a surprise weapon it is quite dangerous if black doesn't know how to react to whites best plan. I quickly got a winning position with this against a 2400+ rated player.

White can continue with c4, Nc3 and Rc1. It's a line I sometimes played myself in the 1970s and I've noticed Jobava playing it in recent years.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 12:18 pmThe "refutation" is presumably 2.Bb2, Nf6 3.Bxf6, but then you have the same position as after 1.d4, Nf6 2.Bg5, g6 3.Bxf6 ( what else? ), but having played a pawn to b3 instead of d4. I tried the idea 1. b3 Nf6 2. Bb2 d5 3. e3 Bf5 4. Bxf6 exf6 5. Ne2 0-0 6. d4 against Bernard Cafferty once. Other than creating an original position, I doubt its merit.

Are you willing to reveal what that plan is? I'm asking because I would like to know.Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 12:24 pmHowever as a surprise weapon it is quite dangerous if black doesn't know how to react to whites best plan.

Re: Ginger GM Collection Sale
I never had much trouble playing it against it myself - just used to go 1...Nf6 2Bg5 Ne4 and just get c5 in quick - always felt a fairly comfortable game with black... mind you we are talking the minors and inters here, where you can make a lot of it up as you go alongRoger de Coverly wrote: You used to get people seeking to avoid the Tromp.
