Wow, that must have taken some years to amass! Never got along with the Roman's lab stuff though, the Roman's Lab Vol 16 - Learn to play the English The Easy Way (or play the "EEEnnnnnnglishhhh!" as he says it) is hilarious, he spends half of those 2 hours showing us lines he isn't going to recommend (because that's not "EEEnnnnnnglishhhh!!!")

Agreed, Jon, his personal style and habit of not liking variations he's covering is brilliant!

Open Caro-Kann DVD: "The Caro-Kann is not the opening I would play for black if I had a choice, and I do have a choice so I don't play it" but he does know what he is talking about, and I like that he has an opinion as well.

As a dyslexic I found those videos, and Romans more than anyones, far more instructive than any book.

Yeah they are definatally more in-depth that the Foxy ones, say. There are one or two really good Foxy's, but the majority don't cover anywhere near enough and in a practical game you are on your own from move 5, if you rely on those alone. I just cant get past the amount of waffle in the Roman ones though :)

You sold them at £750 for the lot? (£5 each, rather than try and get £10 for each one for a total of £1500). You must have needed the space and/or cash. Forgive me for asking, but "Good condition: 50% new in shrink wrapping, most of the rest watched once." Does that mean you bought 75 chess DVDs and never watched them at all? I have unopened (movie and TV) DVDs on my shelves. Glad I'm not the only one...

Opening books (and DVDs) make me fall asleep. The final 48 in your list (from "48 below here" onwards) look more interesting. The best game collections, match/WCC games, Kasparov GM video, Intel Grand Prix, and Mednis/Woolf middlegame/endgame DVDs. Does anyone have any views on those and how good/bad they are? Also how rare, if I wanted to try and find them (presuming they don't pop up for sale somewhere soon at £10 or more a pop...).

Also, do chess DVDs tend to have subtitles? It seems only mainstream big DVD producers have the resources to subtitle material.

I’ve come to the conclusion that books aren’t a lot of use at my level (and probably several levels up) I have 3 big storage boxes full which I’ve attempted to sit down with over this years, with a board and pieces, got 10 moves into a variation, then come to sub variation 1, 2,3,4 and 5 on move 10, which needs going through, then back to the main line (reconstruct the original position from scratch) then on to move 12 with 5 more sub variations and so on… half an hour into that I’ve lost all interest, and good luck to anyone who has the patience!

There’s that, plus if you put the position from a book into Fritz it often evaluates the position a lot different from the author - a “winning weapon” line will quite often be equal or loosing.

A good DVD on the other hand has a lot of benefits and I’ve found the info in them sticks a lot better - The main problem with them in the past was that they might only use 1 or 2 example games to cover a whole variation, and you’d quickly find yourself on your own. But the new Chess Base ones are actually getting quite in-depth.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Chess DVD with subtitles though :)

Pick your authors carefully! Game annotations by top players, or what they say at press conferences can sometimes be more reliable. That said, your opponent's opening choices can be influenced by the latest recommendations. The effect now seems to have faded, but for a while the ideas of playing Qe2 in the Spanish became popular, as advocated in a book by Andrew Greet.

Indeed, things pop in and out of fashion, For a while a had a lot of people play 1...e6 and f5 against my 1.d4, solely, I suspect because of Simon Williams, but it has less effect in the Intermediates, because regardless of fashion, the majority of players don't get past move 10 without forgetting the analysis, then you are just in a game.

Simon as it happens did me a favor though - I picked up a ton of quick wins against people who tired to play the pure 1.d4, f5 2.Bg5, h6 stuff (before the killer French came out ) not a good idea to go into a living on a razors edge variation, if you only have a vague idea of what to do, when there is only one move to stop mate :D
