Northumbria Masters
I had hoped to watch some games from the above event this afternoon, but the link to Live Games on the Tournament website takes you to Chess 24 and all its says is Waiting for Pairings. Since there are no results in the Standings column, it looks like there have been no live games throughout. That is a disappointment but I would have expected there to be a note on the Tournament website with an explanation and at least giving some score updates.

Re: Northumbria Masters
I assume you mean underrated, but that isn't clear. His rating is based mostly on rated games since January, in which he has scored 11/24 against 1800 opposition. Taken at face value, that should put him reliably in the 1650-1900 range ( leaving aside his earlier results, which would narrow that range ).John Moore wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2019 7:16 pmCharlie appears to have lost to a player who may be a little unrated!!
However, this is his first experience of playing against 2200+ opposition, and he evidently flourishes when taking on people who know what they are doing. Such players do exist, but can it be said that they are underrated?

Morning Nick. Yes, I did mean underrated but I hadn't looked at his previous rating history. Be interesting to see what happens to him in the rest of the tournament.

Were it not for taking a half point bye in the first round he would be on track for an IM norm. I think it might still be theoretically possible but would involve exceeding the norm requirement by one extra win.Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2019 7:34 pmYes amazing performance by Armaan Gogia http://chess-results.com/tnr463482.aspx ... Still in with a chance and more likely is Aditya Munshi.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Both Armaan and Adi are from Nottinghamshire; the former playing for Ashfield in the 4NCL whilst the latter represents Grantham Sharks. They follow in the footsteps of Jonah Willow who I'm sure will soon have IM qualifying norms.
FIDE ratings for juniors tend to lag behind ECF gradings which are a much more reliable source of junior strength. Had we used Armaan's FIDE rating last year (rather than his ECF conversion) he would have been playing below me which much be a sorry prospect for any up and coming junior.

In Birtwhistle v Basman, is 57 Qd4 the Worst Move On The Board? I can't see any other way to give Black a guaranteed mate in 3.

Ah, good point, duh. This is why it is always a good idea to check.
