I'm looking for a book that will teach the child the very basics of the game so he can decide whether he enjoys it or not. As his parents only know how the pieces move, he's not going to get much useful help from them. I want a book that he can work through with his father, but also pitched at a level where he could read it on his own if he wanted to (perhaps when he's a bit older).

Tony Gillam and Jeff Coakley books are good - you need something with lots of pictures and not so many words.

Nothing. I found out a couple of weeks ago that the set has yet to be taken out of its box. His mother was not at all enthusiastic when I mentioned getting him a book. A game for his playstation was preferred.
If I had got a book it might have been
this one.
