It's somewhat like the old concept of a telephone match. When the national club competitions attracted more than a handful of teams, there would be one or two of these every season. Obviously you need a venue with sufficient internet connections or enough mobile broadband devices. The bigger problem is that you need a neutral arbiter or steward at each venue to avoid both cheating and the accusation of cheating. In the USA, it's the only plausible way of organising national team competitions. In Europe, we seem to have stuck with the idea that one or both teams should travel and be present in the flesh.

I am working with a commercial partner to develop the appropriate environment for an on-line National Schools League.

This will undergo trialling after Christmas. This is to ensure teachers and parents are content with the environment.

I've already established that draconian schools firewalls will allow the application to operate properly.

The same platform will be usable for "ordinary chess clubs".

If you are interested in being involved in the trials then please email me at [email protected]

Carl, is it possible to use ChessCube for team matches in this way?

How was the question of players time dealt with in a telephone match?

I believe that the Speaking Clock acted as arbiter in these matches.

From memory: Each player had a normal (analogue) clock which recorded their own time. The clock was started when the opponent's move was played on the board and stopped when the player had recorded their next move on the slip for the messenger. The position of the half clock not relevant in each venue was ignored. It was permissable to ask about your opponent's clock position.

It this surreal world it is possible to make many moves in the last minute, simply because of the despatch delay did not count for either player.

I suppose they do have the concept of 'rooms' so it should be possible

I pop on there every so often for a quick game since it's about the only time I ever play now...
