Greater Manchester Summer Chess Congress report 2018
151 competitors attended the Manchester Summer Chess Congress held at Manchester University 18-20 Aug 2018; one of the biggest Manchester Summer Chess Congress in last twenty plus years. Players from all over the world took part; China, Bulgaria, Spain, Greece, Slovakia, Scotland, Wales, England.
Manchester Summer Open
The Open attracted 37 competitors. The winner was Bolton’s FM Joseph McPhillips 4.5/5 winning £500. Joe won his first four games. In the final round he drew with IM Nikolay Milchev (Stoke Area), who was joint second with FM Adam Ashton (3Cs) on 4/5, both winning £187.50.

The under 185 grading prize was shared between Dennis Owen (Urmston) and Chris Vassiliou (Chorlton), winning £30 each.

Manchester Summer Major
The Major Section attracted 70 players and was won jointly by Athar Ansari (Newport) and Samuel Toniolo (Altrincham & Hale) with 4.5/5, both winning £375.
In equal third were Graham Ashcroft (Preston), David Gillespie (Scotland Area), Brendan O'Gorman (DHSS), Ethan Chung (South Wales) with 4/5, each winning £31.25.
The under 145 Grading prize was shared between David Aspinall (Lytham St Annes) and Martin Gawne (Barrow) with 3.5/5, receiving £30 each.
Entrants 70; Prize fund £935.
Manchester Summer Knights
1= Roger Walker (Belper), Patrick Sartain (Harrow), Zak Tomlinson (Barnaby Dun) with 4/5, winning £291.66 each.
The under 110 Grading Prize was shared between Tashika Arora (Oxford High School) and Alex Sosnowski (Eccles), winning £30 each.
