Photos and Results of the 1st Kingston Rapidplay, 28 July 2018

Post by John Saunders » Thu Aug 02, 2018 3:23 pm

If I might divert attention away from Kingston-upon-Hull to Kingston-upon-Thames just for a moment...

The 1st Kingston Rapidplay took place on 28 July 2018 at the United Reformed Church, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.

There was a pretty good turn-out (c. 70) for this inaugural congress organised by Ed Mospan and Genc Tasbasi of Kingston CC, with the hall being close to capacity. Adam Raoof acted as arbiter.

Full results may be found here.

Open: 1st= Gavin Wall, Jovica Radovanovic 5/6
Major U160: 1st Graham Alcock 6/6
Minor U120: 1st= Conall McBrinn, Srivathsa Venkataramanan 5/6

As it was held only a few minutes' walk from where I live, I wandered along to take some photos.

Great collection of photos (was sorry to miss this event, but hopefully it will be the first of many).

This photo is suitable for a caption competition (look at the move played):

Already done it on FB, Chris. "Mike Basman opens with 1.a3 so Richard Bates calls over the arbiter to see if he can claim under article 11.1 of the FIDE laws of chess that states: 'The players shall take no action that will bring the game of chess into disrepute.'"

Oh, that's a good one. Maybe this one as well?

"T-shirt advertising, Mospan, that's where the money is".

Or this one?

[though as I can't think of anything for this one, maybe not]

In fairness, 1.a3 makes more sense than 1.g4, as you'll probably play it in the first 10 moves anyway!
