Looks like a strong event - how did entries compare with last year?

Yes we were very pleased; the Open in particular was one of the strongest up north, I’ve seen in recent memory. Of course we do have the advantage of been right before the British - some of our stronger players came to warm up for that
I don’t have the exact figures in front of me, but numbers were up by 40+ over last year.
Strangely enough it was the Minor that was a little thin on the ground this year, but we are confident that will level out in time.

Depends where you consider the North starting I suppose!Jon Mahony wrote:Yes we were very pleased; the Open in particular was one of the strongest up north, I’ve seen in recent memory.
If it hadn't been for the ECF membership scheme, you'd have been 80 up on last year.Jon Mahony wrote:I don’t have the exact figures in front of me, but numbers were up by 40+ over last year.

The Leeds evening league is also the only evening league in Yorkshire that sends all it's games for ECF grading. Bradford are considering following suit.

Jon , I will make every effort to attend Leeds Congress next year. Hope the wife sticks to crashing her own car next year rather than mine !

Re: 2nd Leeds Chess Congress Results
It wasn't FIDE rated, so players didn't have to upgrade to Gold. Bronze players would have had to play an extra £ 6 on the entry fee and most likely for a single event. Does it matter? Uncertain, but some Northern and other Congress organisers would complain bitterly about having to add on £ 2 per head or thereabouts to pay the BCF or ECF for Congress membership.Sean Hewitt wrote:If it hadn't been for the ECF membership scheme, you'd have been 80 up on last year.

Re: 2nd Leeds Chess Congress Results
Great to see central Leeds chess coming back into things after rather too long. Still quite a way to catch Scarbrough/Blackpool I think
As Andrew noted, the Leeds evening league is ECF graded and membership levels are very high with it - 82 per cent by players, 92 by games. Not that a congress in Leeds won't logically draw people in from lots of places, or for that matter that the other Yorkshire congresses noticed any sort of effect. (It looks to have been very level year on year.).

All the games from the Open are now available on the Leeds Congress website, some of which are annotated.
You can also see many pictures, reports and full crosstables!

Games in pgn format for download are best presented in text files with a pgn extension. Pasting them to html is all very well and would work well for pasting them on a forum, but those wanting to incorporate them in a database then have the task of pasting them back from html into text.Andrew Bak wrote:All the games from the Open are now available on the Leeds Congress website, some of which are annotated.
Round 10 of the British Championship is the preferred approach

This is a plain text file that can also be opened with a text editor or word processor as well as your chess software of choice.

To be honest I hadn't checked the links as I already had the games in my database!Roger de Coverly wrote:Games in pgn format for download are best presented in text files with a pgn extension. I'll contact the webmaster and see if he can link to a .pgn download file.
