There were nominally four sections, but it seems the one named the Manchester Junior Championship (funded by the University of Bolton) had to be split into two sections, one the Championship proper and one which looked like the weaker end of the ability spectrum, these both being placed a 5-round rapidplay events played during the Friday, prior to the start of the standard-rate section. The number of junior section entrants will doubtless have been increased by entry being free. Sections were thus as follows:
