It was a great news when it was announced at the Scarborough Congress that Blackpool will probably go ahead. Sadly the Blackpool Congress website still says TBA.

Would you be able to give a precis of what it said for the information of non-regulars at Blackpool?

I deleted the email but it said something to the effect of - "after Scarborough, we thought we could go ahead ... but then we've got this new variant so we are not absolutely sure now .... we'll see how things go and let you know ..."

... now I remember a bit more ... Bill O'Rourke said that there was some remediation work at the hotel and it didn't seem clear how long this would take - but Bill hoped to write again in (I think) a month or so...

"Dear former Blackpool Chess Congress entrant.

First of all I hope this finds you well.

Secondly If you do not wish to get further congress updates, please let me know and i will immediately remove you from the database.

I am now receiving a steady trickle of enquiries with regards to a possible 2022 congress, and I thought it wise to send out a general update.

Up to last week, I was coming to the conclusion that following Scarborough having taken place lately relatively successfully, then I would very soon be able to announce that the congress was going ahead. A full team of arbiters has been assembled,

Since then two set-backs have occurred:

1/ The new threat of this omicron variant. Nobody can predict right now what effect this is going to have, and I suspect it will be just before Christmas before a clearer picture emerges regards seriousness of infection, resistance to current vaccinations and transmissibility.

2/ The Hotel have informed me that during their current lull in bookings, they have taken advantage to perform repairs and renovations that will overrun well into the New Year.

Rather than use a crystal ball, I instead prefer to further update you in about one months time as to the situation of the congress taking place.

Keep well, and best regards for now.
Bill O'Rourke
Blackpool Congress organiser."

Is there any information as to the identity of the said arbiters, or as to the dates proposed? Knowledge of the latter would at least give other organisers the option of avoiding that weekend for their events.

Dave Clayton will be there aswell.
Pre-pandemic there was an arbiter who had a Welsh accent and white hair. I can't remember is name though.

If he had a typical arbiter shape, it could have been Peter Purland.

Yeah that's him. I couldn't remember his name.
He enjoyed the Fish 'n' Chips in Blackpool.

I’m not holding my breathe on this one when Bill looks at the situation in early January. It might not be a pretty picture!

The original email did have a rather pessimistic tone.
& there was talk at Scarborough of problems securing the venue for Blackpool.
