Game-inputting & replays
Game-inputting & replays
All games for the entire first weekend, for both D1 & D2, were available for replay within forty minutes of the close. What took so long? And with fewer hands available, even D3n games from rd 1 were up by Sat evening
Seriously, it's an astonishing performance. Thanks!

Games played on DGT boards don't require manual input unless the technology breaks down, for obvious reasons.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

It is still impressive but in the process of adding Birtwhistle - Bullen, the file for 2b round 2 now contains the Jessel - Rogers game twice and with different moves. So we have 32 games but not necessarily the right games. So hold fire on the down-loads if prepping for players in that section.

With D3&4 South it will be a bit later I expect.
It is not just the number of games it is also our poor writing in the south.
Not just the juniors. Plenty of adults have bad handwriting. Best wishes to game inputters!

It's more to do with the fact that the arbiters who are also able to key games in at a reasonable speed are at Division 1 & 2, and not Division 3s & 4s. So they have to be input after the event. They still normally appear within 7 days.

Alex - the whole team do a great job.
Do volunteers need to be arbiters to input.

Anybody can input games; I go to a number of tournaments as a player-inputter.

"Anybody can input games; I go to a number of tournaments as a player-inputter."
Nevertheless, the inputters do a great job. I have just put the games on for an unnamed tournament. Even one pair of experienced (i.e. older than me) 150+ players made 4 mistakes in the first ten moves. The inexperienced players (some playing their first tournament) were providing scores that said e.g. 1.e4 e5 2.Bc6, or 1.b2. Also, when experienced players say Nd7 or Re1 and there are two possibilities, you can usually guess which is right!
I only had 130 games to do, so I'm not saying I did a great job, (I gave up on some of the games) but Jack, Alex and the others cope with this all the time.

Re: Game-inputting & replays
Playing through a database game you quite often find that the result is inconsistent with the final position. There may sometimes be a legitimate reason for that, but I generally assume that there were more moves which could not be reconstructed.

With different moves as well! Just as well (for me) there aren't five versions. My unlucky opponent would probably have won the game four times out of those five from the middlegame, if so.J T Melsom wrote: ↑Sun Nov 11, 2018 7:49 pmIt is still impressive but in the process of adding Birtwhistle - Bullen, the file for 2b round 2 now contains the Jessel - Rogers game twice and with different moves. ..

Re: Game-inputting & replays
The one that normally draws groans of despair from the game-inputting community is when players helpfully write something like Nbd7, with the Knights on b6 and b8. More than once I've read the b as a 6, and only later spotted the mistake when it all went badly wrong.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 9:51 amAlso, when experienced players say Nd7 or Re1 and there are two possibilities, you can usually guess which is right!

Re: Game-inputting & replays
I had one or two on the Isle of Man where the player wrote N&d5, where the & was a squiggle that could reasonably be b, f or 6, with the knights on b6 and f6.

It's all too easy to hit 1-0 instead of 0-1...
