Roger Emerson v. Home Office? Too close to callTim Harding wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 2:39 pmThe main thing Hou Yifan would need to be concerned about is not to violate the terms of her visa. Rather than worry about it, simpler to say no?

You would hope that in the event of any dispute, that her university and college (St Hilda's) would support her. Anyway, if it is only a year, would anything happen before she finished the course (though she may want to take up options to continue studying or working in the UK)? She may in any event be too busy studying.
She is on a Rhodes Scholarship (I think that is still impressive):

She is studying for a MSc in Education.
It does sound impressive (I am sure it is):

"4 Chinese students win Rhodes Scholarships among 12,000 global candidates"
Ah, she is studying at the Blavatnik School of Government!

The reports saying she was studying for an MSc in Education may be inaccurate (unless that was earlier), as she is studying for a Master of Public Policy (MPP).Blavatnik School of Government wrote: Yifan Hou

I graduated from Peking University (PKU), with a degree in International Studies, majoring in Diplomacy. Besides being a student, I am a four-time Women's World Chess Champion and currently the number one female player in the world. As the Special Adviser of the Commission for Women's Chess (WOM) and member of Chess in Schools Commission (CIS) under the World Chess Federation (FIDE), I am not only involved with related-policy making, but also promoted the chess industry and encouraged underprivileged children to follow their dreams. At the 95th Anniversary of the May 4th Movement, hosted by PKU, I was the sole undergraduate representative to meet and report to President Xi Jinping. Lately, I have worked at the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, assisting with Chinese Market launching and social media strategy. I am excited about my prospects in the Education domain and related policy area at the global level and looking forward to meeting like-minded people in the MPP class.
Yifan Hou is a Rhodes Scholar 2018-19.

There was a recent Court case where it was ruled that Bridge and by implication Chess were not legally sports in the UK. Rambling however is, so does walking infringe the visa conditions?Tim Harding wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 2:39 pmOn a superficial reading, if the article and mentioned thread are correct, it seems to say it is OK for her to play for a professional sports team but not an amateur one.

Or running for a bus. In fairness, there's plenty of rambling on this site.

This is the key argument, to my mind. The government can't, on the one hand, say that chess isn't a sport and block any efforts by it and games like bridge to be recognised as such, while then insisting that the alleged Tier 4 visa regulations apply to chess because it is a sport. If the government are going to insist on the distinction being of significance, then they can't redefine chess on a whim for some regulations but not others.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 3:49 pmThere was a recent Court case where it was ruled that Bridge and by implication Chess were not legally sports in the UK.

I'm afraid they can, although I guess it would be susceptible to legal challenge.Alex Holowczak wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 7:08 pmIf the government are going to insist on the distinction being of significance, then they can't redefine chess on a whim for some regulations but not others.

As promised above. Comments in the comments box at the end of the article are helpful to show the sports editor that the subject matter interests chessplayers. The last article about the 4NCL received only four comments.

The three returning medalists received a round of applause at the start of play at 4NCL on the Saturday, incidentally. I don't post on Guardian anymore but we certainly should support the column and any comments that show some knowledge are perhaps all the more helpful.

Is it too late to correct the error about Michael Adams being registered at the start of the season?
