Division 1/2 2021-22

Post by Neil Graham » Mon Nov 22, 2021 9:27 am

A new section to discuss the 4NCL's top division. Might be useful to actually see the results from the opening rounds! :)

From that seeding we can conclude that the expected division 1 for 2022-23 would be

Wood Green, Chess.com Manx Liberty, Guildford Young Guns, Chessable White Rose 1, Cheddleton, The Sharks 1 ,Wood Green Youth, Celtic Tigers 1, Barbican 4NCL, Blackthorne Russia, Gonzaga, Cambridge University 1

The nine teams seeded or division 2 would be

West is Best 1, Sussex Martlets 1 ,Anglian Avengers ,Warwickshire Select 1,Kings Head , Barnet Knights A, Manchester Manticores , North East England , The ADs

The remaining seven looking to avoid a division 3 would be

Guildford Castles, The Sharks 2, Chessable White Rose 2, Oxford 1 -,Alba,Check Inn ,KJCA Kings

White Rose and Alba would presumably elect for 3N with Oxford choosing 3C

Rule 13.4 is worth noting:

For the 2022-23 season, in Divisions 1, 2, 3 South, 3 Central and 3 North, no more than one team from any club will be permitted to play in the same division.

Aren't you allowed to split your squad? 3C is already somewhat Oxford heavy, more so if Oxford 1 join them.

I'd suspect in practice that the rule wouldn't be applied to 3C and 3N which are small enough anyway without having teams excluded.

For the 2022-23 season, in Divisions 1, 2, 3 South, 3 Central and 3 North, no more than one team from any club will be permitted to play in the same division. If it is not possible to organise a Division 4 at a venue, then this rule will not apply to Division 3 at that venue.

You are allowed to split your squad yes but that makes no difference to this rule. They would have to have different club names eg Wood Green & Midland Monarchs.

Looking outside at all the snow it might have been wiser if I had driven to Milton Keynes yesterday!

Excited to see how the teams lineup today. It's going to be a very interesting season - the most competitive in many years.

Except presumably the strongest teams won't need to be at full strength this weekend

Then there is the weather and travel restrictions

Will be interesting nonetheless

As usual in a first round swiss, rather few overall surprises: Gonzaga losing to Oxford was the main surprise, whilst an under strength Celtic Tigers drew with Guildford 2. Both underdogs relatively dangerous though. Blackthorne and Wood Green 2 only just won, though at a glance they were not in serious danger. Barnet Knights very impressive on the top two boards. Cheddleton the only team to win all eight games but there were a number of other heavy score lines too.

If you had glanced at our board 3 and 5 positions then you may have formed a different assessment

round 2 pairings include Speelman v Gormally; a handful of defaults

Quite pleased to see the manticores field 8 players each day, given our proposed board 1 pulled out ill on Thursday; Cheddleton much too strong for us yesterday
