Re: Caplin Hastings 2023-24

I wonder if PC was thinking of possible tricks after 8....Qc7, but they don't actually work. 3. d5 was played a couple of times by Tigran Petrosian among others. After 8. .. Qc7, a stockfish comes up with the idea 9. Qxa8 Bc3 where it thinks Black is worse but by a pawn, not a rook. In particular i...

Can the title be changed to indicate Caplin?
The first poster in a thread can do this. I have done so and it should change all future comments.

Is there an equivalent of Stockfish for Xiangqi? Presumably yes.

I think Dubai 1986 had a partial boycott?
Israel didn't participate and the Dutch joined them.

For England I think Jon Mestel declined to be selected.

Otherwise the line up looks pretty much complete.

That included a good result at the European Union Individual Championship in 2008 at Liverpool (6/10 playing 8 GMs and performing at 2490 - presumably only narrowly missing a GM norm there.) With a little marginal assistance from Nokia ! (Nigel's phone alarm went off to remind him that it was still...

Was it said that she could be "the first female to become a grandmaster in the United Kingdom"??
If that was said, it wouldn't be correct.

Re: Jumping titles

I remember Nigel Short wrote something about it in the BCM around 92. Whatever happened there? You've got the title for life now, haven't you? They don't take titles away do they? The rule before and after Nigel's articles was that titles are retained for life. Titles have been removed for cheating...

Re: British Chess Championship 2024

The date and venue for the 2023 Championships were announced on or about 20th January 2023. We also don't know dates and venues for the English Championships, including the Senior versions. It's usually in May, but if one might be planning to play the Frome Congress, there's a potential clash of dat...

Re: SUNWAY SITGES INTERNATIONAL CHESS FESTIVAL 12 to 22 December 2023

His withdrawal was requested too late though to avoid his opponent winning by default and, after the upfloat, being catapulted, for free, to 5.5/6, unfairly impacting the tournament. That at least in part is down to FIDE intransigence in not allowing pairings to be changed or repairings to avoid de...

Re: London Chess Classic 2023

That is a fair point. And those ratings in 2001 are clearly not ELO... They look more like Clarke grades! As far as I recall they were calculated using Elo methods, pretty much the same as the established ratings. They chopped off the final digit, rounding them to three figures. I believe that was ...

Re: London Chess Classic 2023

For standard ratings the player profiles go back to Jan 2000 so you could check the players that way. Ratings before that are available at https://www.olimpbase.org/index.php?https%3A%2F%2Fwww.olimpbase.org%2FElo%2Fsummary.html Jul 1985 has Adams at 2360 (rating lists only went down to 2200 for mal...

There's also https://www.redhotpawn.com/forum/only-chess.9, but don't expect a terribly high standard of chess.

It's very quiet, but https://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl has a decent standard of debate, mostly about openings.

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

Magnus is fined 10,000 (ten thousand) Euros for walking out of the Sinquefield Cup. He wasn't found guilty of anything else, just withdrawing from a tournament without good reason. There wasn't an Ethics Commission in Fischer's day, you wonder what they would have done to him had there been one.
