Re: Disagreeing with your chess computer

Regarding point 2,Do you think most human minds would see it the computer's way? Getting 2 connected past pawns looks like a non brainer when there are no tactics in the air. I think it depends how much you use the concept of the "bad bishop" where the bishop is blocked in by pawns of its own colou...

Re: Inaugural Wells Chess Congress 8th - 10th March 2024

If you are commuting, Wells used to have three railway stations, but that has reduced to, er, zero. There is car parking, but it is worth researching, as the one I normally use (Union Street) only allows you to stop for three hours, but they stop charging at 6 pm from memory, so it's OK for Friday....

SetUp "1"] [FEN "r1b1kb1r/pp2np1p/1qn3p1/3N2P1/3Pp3/1Q2P3/PP3PBP/R1B1K1NR b KQkq - 0 10"] Move 10. Why is Nxd5 so bad? Computer thinks that 10...Nxd5, 11.Qxd5 Bb4+ 12.Kf1 Qa6+ 13.Ne2 Bf5 is good for black. It likes the resulting position for Black at move 14 where the White KIng is unsafe and White...

This will in turn potentially see more delegates going to council with different ideas and perspectives.
Would it not be just as likely that the collectors of proxies would have a field day?

Re: ECF meeting reports

Which could in turn have a significant impact on... what? From time to time, the ECF Council are allowed to vote on the direction of the ECF. Sometimes that takes the form of a contested election for directors, even when the opposition candidate is "none of the above". On other issues I suspect the...

I played him in the Surrey League in 1997, when he was graded 192.
I think he played in Opens from time to time. I seem to recall he was in the top half of the seedings at the Torbay Open of 1990 when the second half defeated the top half in round one.

Re: Chess history trivia

However since it was a two round match, I did wonder if the second game would have been played on the following day Almost certainly I would think. It would be another two decades or longer before quickplay finishes became the norm, so playing schedules would have to allow for adjournments and game...

Re: FEN Code Database

Does anyone know how they work and, more importantly, if there are any websites that allow you to generate them I don't think they are new being based on Forsyth notation, which is something one needed to know in the days of adjudications and adjournments. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forsyth%E2%8...

Re: FIDE ratings revaluation

In the past exceptional players have entered the rating list with ratings above 2300, 2400, even 2500. Can you imagine the deflationary effect of playing some future Kasparov, Shirov or Ivanchuk if they enter the rating list at 2200, when their playing strength is already about 2600 and they are im...

Re: Caplin Hastings 2023-24

Wondered how a 1847 was allowed in u1600. No idea why he was given an unrated status. Only the Hastings Weekend Open was FIDE rated, so the organisers ignored the FIDE ratings for players in the lower sections. That said, it is not uncommon for conditions of entry to allow ratings from sources othe...

Re: British Championship Congress 2024

It might be out at the Hulll University Campus. That has been used for the September Congress. It has on-site accomodation and an on-site Wetherspoons but is a couple of miles away from the city centre and old town.

Re: Caplin Hastings 2023-24

I'm not sure if you tuned in to the commentary but Richard Pert mentioned that the Bc7 move is mentioned in the book he wrote on the opening many years ago so it was an inspired opening choice. Twenty years ago or more, Jack met my Tromp with 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 e6 3. e4 d5 . That superficially looks ...

FIDE ratings revaluation
