Re: British Championship Congress 2021

Chess players have been fretting about the number of very old chess players for at least 20 years, during which time the age profile hasn't noticeably changed. Are you quite sure about that? Isn't it more the case that the players are mostly the same people as twenty years ago, only twenty years ol...

Re: General Reference Books for Chess Openings

I don't think this type of book is going to be published any more (overtaken by computer databases). I suppose the concept of a "book move" still exists, but it will be spread over several specialist books. As for "main line", do we suppose that should be defined as the most popular move, regardles...

Re: Peter Markland

Your question may be irrelevant, unfortunately. Norms obtained prior to 2005 or 2006 - I forget which - can no longer be registered with FIDE. I imagine he was referring to Hastings 1970/71. Here's a link to the cross table. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=80932 Once the Elo rating sys...

Re: British Championship Congress 2021

We should be showing our appreciation for those who will be giving up many hours of there time, for little or no reward, to put on the British Online Championships in August and the OTB British Championship events in October. Provided freedom of association is allowed again in August it ought to be...

Re: Senior Tournaments in 2021

Since the UK is well ahead of most countries (other than Israel) on vaccinations, maybe a senior event could be organised later this year, though probably without overseas participants. The British Championship Congress in Torquay is now not being run in 2021. That could allow the British Senior Ch...

It's not ideal, but that could be fitted into one weekend, or, better, one 3 day bank holiday weekend.
Choose the Spring Bank Holiday weekend and it could run in parallel to the usual 4NCL Congress. Presumably a "Midlands" venue would be needed.

Re: British Championship Congress 2021

It seems as if the ECF Board more or less decided to give up the idea of a Torquay British before anyone knew the Government's supposed timetable for lifting restrictions. The Board's minutes for the meeting held on 22 January 2021 have been published: https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-content/uplo...

Re: Proposed reorganisation

In Div 3 South, 2 promotion spots for 16 teams already left little room for error. 1 Spot for 12 teams seems particularly unforgiving. Six or possibly eight teams for a play off weekend, three places from a three round Swiss perhaps. You might weight the number of play off places by the size of the...

Why are there two threads with the same name I am confused?
They were started at different times, the first pre-lockdown. They may as well be merged if that's straightforward.

Division 3 would be split into North, Central and South ideally also as 12 team APAs

Division 4 would be a Swiss with again the North, Central and South split
How promotion and relegation would work becomes a key question.

(while still wearing masks and practising social distancing in public places).
You cannot play over the board chess normally, by which I mean on a single board without screens, and remain two metres from your opponent. Three hours or more in a mask is unlikely to be popular either.

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

The government's advice for indoor sports last time round was "consult your national governing body". There's also the problem that more often than not, the government refuses to regard chess as a sport. There is a quasi Government body namely the "Sport & Recreation Alliance" of which the ECF is a...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

If you agreed to rent tables what would happen if regulations didn't allow the British to go ahead? One might suppose that hire of a venue also suitable for conferences and weddings such as the Riviera Centre would include the use of tables and chairs supplied in house. The bigger problem is that t...

Karpov will be 70 in May. As far as ex world champions continuing to compete at high levels I should imagine Smyslov and Lasker are the record holders so far.

Re: Briish Championship Congress 2021

And before anyone asks when is Scotland going to hold the British, under the current FIDE title regulations it is extremely unlikely to ever happen. (Players would need to declare the British as their national championship in place of the Scottish. Chess Scotland is unlikely to devalue its own cham...
