Is it not The Kalashnikov?
That's usually regarded as the sequence 1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 e5

This is different because 5. Bb5+ can be played and may be best anyway.

Transpositions to other systems with an early .. e5 are possible if White doesn't play this.

Um, can I ask: is this a Board-level appointment?
The word "Director" implies that it is, otherwise it would be Events Manager. Did Council give approval for the Board to create new Director positions as and when they felt like it?

Yes, but I am sure people spend more than an hour watching a film, at home or in a cinema, without taking exercise.
Also there would be players who do not leave the board for the entire duration of a classical time limit game of chess and that's never been flagged as a health hazard.

Re: Magnus Carlsen Invitational 2021, 13-24 March

How far back do you now have to go to find winning chances for White in the PP? I've played Nb3 allowing the queen exchange with .. Qe3+. White's edge is miniscule, if at all, but the game continues. Against the line with .. h6, you can defend the b2 pawn tactically with a3. You can also do this in...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Hasting is receiving a little support from FIDE. It is more complex than an British only event. FIDE were proposing to repeat their World Championship Swiss qualifier in the Isle of Man in autumn. The Isle of Man has self-isolated and I don't think has given any statements as to when it will reopen...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I have a feeling that we're driving things low enough before reopening/vaccinations sufficiently far along that any 3rd wave will be very heavily lowered. The risk to event organisers is also that political and medical establishments will panic and impose lockdowns "just in case". I suppose the shu...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

The ECF's latest guidance offers a somewhat pessimistic note. https://www.englishchess.org.uk/covid-spring-response-pathway/ Step 4 includes a more general opening subject to further review and regulations in force at the time. We envisage that chess events will open up in a number of phases within ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Bury's venue is a Sports Club, which is opening indoors from 17 May (provisionally), but only with social distancing we are told, so maybe not for chess Isn't it suggested that "rule of 6" would once again apply? It's possible that you could have multiple groups of six, but without ECF guidance I d...

Re: Robert Silk Tournament Games

Incidentally this excerpt from di Felice (via Google Books, I do not have the item) suggests that the 1978 event overlapped with the Evening Standard Open for a period of several days. Can this be right? The Evening Standard events were 6 round Swisses on what was then the normal 1*Friday, 3*Saturd...

Re: Registered Coaches Scheme

Suppose a very experienced coach only wished to coach very strong adult players. A very strong adult player is also unlikely to find much use for training from a player appreciably worse than themselves. If arguably such a player needed coaching in how not to lose to FMs and above, the trainer is l...

Re: British Championship Congress 2021

Chess players have been fretting about the number of very old chess players for at least 20 years, during which time the age profile hasn't noticeably changed. Are you quite sure about that? Isn't it more the case that the players are mostly the same people as twenty years ago, only twenty years ol...

Re: General Reference Books for Chess Openings

I don't think this type of book is going to be published any more (overtaken by computer databases). I suppose the concept of a "book move" still exists, but it will be spread over several specialist books. As for "main line", do we suppose that should be defined as the most popular move, regardles...
