2021 Hybrid Cities Cup

The first ever Hybrid event kicks off this weekend. We've got four teams from Barcelona, Oslo, Tepe Sigeman Chess Malmo and the Slovak Chess Federation. Will it work or perhaps more importantly will any else see enough to want to repeat it? Here is the event website

Re: Opera Euro Rapid Sat 6th Feb to Sun 14th Feb 2021

This one hasn't exactly seized our attention. Personally, I have only followed two rounds on Jon Speelman's Twitch channel. However, I did just check in and immediately Magnus dropped his queen ( in a poor position and needing to win ) via a mouseslip. Carlsen chose to play for a win in the Armaged...

Re: New in Chess & BREXIT

Press statement from New In Chess . Basically reads as everything staying the same, high standards of quality and delivery etc with a direct message that editorial independence will continue as before. I've always thought it was a high class chess magazine so I do hope the change of ownership doesn'...

Re: New in Chess & BREXIT

According to TWIC Magnus Carlsen (or specifically the Play Magnus Group) has just bought New in Chess. Judging by the comments above, I guess the magazine was struggling to survive.

Re: Wijk aan Zee 2021

What a farce. From Premier League games to a Sunday morning pub match on a shared pitch. However, I do wonder whether Giri's clothing was suitable for such a game. Watching the replay of the finish he lost a lot of time continually adjusting the sleeve of his shirt. He really should have donned a sh...

What on earth is that all about?
This is arguably stranger
Remarkably 4...Nf6 appears to be a TN!

Re: GM Yrjo Aukusti Rantanen 1950-2021

I too distinctly remember playing Yrjo once in Gausdal, Norway 1994. I was having the tournament of my life and went into this round having beaten a Swedish IM, Barkhagen (2430) and drawn with Matthew Sadler rated 2560 at the time. Before the round started, the legendary Gausdal organiser, Arnold Ei...

Long time since I watched the series but definitely The Prisoner was a cult classic. FIDE press release: Tal Memorial 2013, 11-year-old Andrey Esipenko is standing next to the soon-to-be world champion Magnus Carlsen. Almost 8 years later, Esipenko defeated Carlsen in Tata Steel Chess Masters and called it one of the best days in his life. https://scontent-lhr8-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Looks like Charlie Storey might be ahead of the game - "Europe’s first completely vaccinated country may well be Malta. Not only is it small, with a population of around 500,000, but it is already inoculating its citizens faster than nearly every other nation on the continent. How it approaches the...

I will watch it again. Instead of the nfl show. Toby Maguire was good in Spiderman. Too many repeats in 10 months.
I thought Liev Schreiber was an excellent Spassky.
