Re: New ECF Rating Database

What a shambles! <snip> Do these computer nerds and web designers etc ever consider the users? No good deed goes unpunished. Here is what you should have written. "Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their evenings and weekends to make this migration possible, we all really appreciate your eff...

Re: ECF AGM 17/10/20

I agree that it would be a conflict of interest to be director and a direct membership representative at the same time. If Tim and Rob win election to the board they should step down from the direct membership representative role.

Re: Club Membership & ECF Membership Fees

Having seen the new regulations it would appear there is no bar to six chess players taking over a table in a pub for a night and playing amongst themselves (you could even make an impromptu blitz tournament out of it). So I personally think chess clubs could stay open provided players are sorted in...

Re: Club Membership & ECF Membership Fees

Well with the announcement tonight it's looking like clubs will be closing as soon as they re-opened.

There may be a get out clause in that people can still meet indoors in bubbles which might allow chess clubs to open provided players stay in their bubble for the night. But it's not looking good.

Re: Club Membership & ECF Membership Fees

I reopened my club last night. It was a slightly muted occasion but some stalwart members are away. Apart from playing with masks everything proceeded mostly as normal.

Re: Membership Renewal

And, as ever, it's no concern of those who choose not to enter. It is however a concern for those who might be consulted over go/no go decisions for other events. In that Northumberland might set a precedent? I don't think there are any right or wrong answers at present and congresses come in all s...

Re: Membership Renewal

If you bothered to read the congress info you would see that there is a strict cap on the number of entries. I was aware there is a cap on entries. But is it for legal reasons or because the venue management says so? My guess is likely as good as yours but I would guess a bit of both. In any case I...

Re: Membership Renewal

Let organisers run tournaments as they want to (within the law) With continual changes to regulations, it can be difficult to know what the law actually is. The organisers of the Northumberland Congress along with the venue owners must believe there are no absolute restrictions on the number of peo...

Re: John Calvert

I never met him but saw him at events. He was a distinctive figure and it's sad to hear that he is no longer with us.

Re: Membership Renewal

If organisers are looking to run events in line with ECF and government guidelines That's arguably the point. Are the restrictions really necessary or just health and safety theatre for the sake of it? Perhaps it's a two stage process. What's the risk of meeting someone infectious? If you do so, wh...

Re: Membership Renewal

I looked at the lengthy list of protocols for playing chess at the the Northumbria congress and decided its not for me. A joyless way of playing but I am sure others will be willing to give it a try. Credit to the organisers for giving it a go. My view precisely. If people are prepared to play in d...

Re: Direct Members’ Representatives election

Could I please make the no doubt controversial suggestion that it's time to give Michael Farthing a break? He has admitted to an error of judgment in the matter and said that he does not intend to repeat it. He has also explained why he feels unable to reverse the decision in this instance. Like al...

Re: Direct Members’ Representatives election

I have to say that I'm struggling to understand why this is being treated by such a big deal. A decision was taken not to publish the exact voting figures, maybe that was the wrong call but unless there are any suggestions that the vote was a stitch up or anything was done in bad faith (and there ap...

John Brooke

I learnt today that John Brooke passed away recently. John represented several clubs within Yorkshire over the years; Bradford, Rose Forgrove, Ilkley, Calderdale and Harrogate (my club). He was also a regular on the congress circuit and had many interests within chess. He was captain of the Yorkshir...

Re: Direct Members’ Representatives election

Juniors could perhaps be easily influenced by others to vote. A few years back the vote for ECF Player of the Year had to be abandoned because school pupils voted en masse for one particular candidate. If parents want to influence what the ECF does then they should join under their own name and not...
