Re: Future of EPSCA Schools Competition
My original point was that it does seem the EPSCA Zoom meeting could have been managed better. However as I've never chaired a Zoom meeting myself I didn't want to imply that I could have done a better job - unlike some contributors to this forum occasionally do.

Re: Future of EPSCA Schools Competition
Flagged to the moderators. Happy to take most things on the chin but not this irrelevant swipe.

Re: Queen's Birthday Honours 2020
John Lawson of Hull and a recipient of the Hardcastle Shield for services to Yorkshire chess was listed in the old YCA grading list as Sir John Lawson, although I don't know what his knighthood was for. He would be in his nineties now although I've not heard anything to say that he has died. Appare...

Re: Future of EPSCA Schools Competition
For the avoidance of confusion I was not referring to John Upham.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 9:33 pm"Having read the minutes it does seem like this is a contrived scandal driven by people who weren't at the meeting."
John U was "at" the meeting - does he think they minutes are reasonably accurate?

Re: Future of EPSCA Schools Competition
Having read the minutes it does seem like this is a contrived scandal driven by people who weren't at the meeting. It does seem that the meeting could have been better organised BUT these are difficult times and we are all adapting to new technology and ways of working. I personally doubt I could ha...

Re: Future of EPSCA Schools Competition
Doesn't the ECF already run the National Schools which they inherited from The Times when they ceased to sponsor it? They also run a junior team event that is effectively for schools only. The ECF National Schools is an event for secondary schools, https://www.englishchess.org.uk/NSCC/ . It is not ...

Re: Future of EPSCA Schools Competition
(It has been reported to me that Clissold said in a later private meeting that he doesn't believe EPSCA should be running Schools events anyway, as he believes that the ECF should be running them.) Doesn't the ECF already run the National Schools which they inherited from The Times when they ceased...

Re: 4NCL On-Line Congresses
Some of the fall may also be down to the fact that some OTB play has started up. Obviously not competitive play/ congresses but it is possible to meet friends for friendly games in the pub which it wasn't before. It may also be that some established players tried online events for want of anything e...

Re: Membership Renewal
Does anyone think that David and Gawain are spongers? I hope not! Some people do unfortunately, or at least assume that if you are a chess Grandmaster you must be loaded. It's often the same school of people who think that the English Chess Federation must be run by people earning six figure salari...

Re: Membership Renewal
The three most popular adult events in the chess calendar are the British Chess Championship, the London Chess Classic (all Malcolm's work of course) and the 4NCL. You could potentially throw in Gibraltar as well. The appeal of these events for many players is the chance to play in the same room as...

Re: Membership Renewal
How do you suppose we get from the current world, where grassroots players are subsidising professional chess, to a perfect world where they aren't? There is only one logical answer to that: somewhere along the line, we have to remove the subsidy. So tell me what event is going to trigger the remov...

Re: Membership Renewal
Evolving and looking towards the future - no-one can argue with that. Why, if we're looking towards the future, did we go into the last Olympiad with Michael Adams on board 1? That's like Southgate calling up Wayne Rooney because he's England's record goalscorer. That's not really comparing like wi...

Re: Membership Renewal
Do you mean Nigel Davies' plan? About the time he transferred to Wales. Indeed - his suggestion as to how things should be done. I actually agreed with much of what Nigel Davies said. What I didn't like was his stinging contempt for the `ragbag of amateurs` who give up their time to run the events ...
