Re: Potential solution to grading vs membership issue

I support these proposals (subject to the financial side making sense). If you go for the (widely touted) £20 figure and no grade unless you join then the 10 graded games a year people will be lost to league chess (and tournaments, too). A universal membership scheme has benefits for both individua...

Re: A demand for the Presidents resignation.

>>The chess analogy would be a "retired" IM or GM. I think you would reduce the duties of the President to a non-executive role and leave running of the ECF to the CEO, the paid staff and the other directors. It is normal practice in public companies to have a non-exec board chairman.<< Hmmmm, how a...

Re: Resignation Rumours

Sean, I play in two leagues (this is fairly common around London). What would happen if one becomes a member organisation and the other opts to stick with game fee - would I have to pay twice?

Re: ECF Council Voting Register

John, I reproduced Peter Sowray's account of this in a post on page 2 of the resignation rumours thread. I have never been a delegate to ECF council but I have participated many times in discussions of the council agenda in Southern Counties and Surrey meetings where there have been detailed discuss...

Re: The President is missing!

As the ECF is a company limited by guarantee the existing board members can fill the vacancies until the next AGM. That is why they have asked for volunteers on the main page of the website. By the way, Charles, I have just read the message where you explain what you have been up to so far on the Ch...

Re: Resignation Rumours

Ben, as everybody seems to be speaking in code (apart from David Robertson on The Atticus site) it is difficult to answer your question, but if there is an old guard on the ECF board I would guess it is Gerry Walsh (the President) and David Welch (Director of Home Chess). From the the limited person...

Re: Resignation Rumours

The ECF board is elected by the ECF council which also has to ratify some board decisions. The makup of council was summarised by Peter Sowray on his website (see the blog link on http://www.ecfomov.co.uk/): "There are 46 Leagues who have a total of 87 votes between them. For example, the 4NCL has 6...

Re: Resignation Rumours

I'm puzzled by the timing of these resignations. I have now heard from two people who were present at the ECF council and nothing seems to have happened which would lead to resignations. As I understand it the board has decided that a universal membership is needed. There are no definite proposals, ...

Re: The Arbitrary 40 point Rule

This is what Sir Richard Clarke wrote about the BCF grading scheme in 1969 (it is part of a longer article where he also discusses other grading schemes). "The B.C.F. Grading System The B.C.F. scheme followed Harkness. As soon as news of this plan reached here, the B.C.F. Development Committee began...

Re: The Arbitrary 40 point Rule

Hi, John. It is so your grade doesn't go up when you lose to a much stronger player (and vice versa). Consider player A (grade 100) playing player B (grade 160). B beats A as expected) but only scores 100+50 grading points, i.e. 150 for the game). A scores 160-50=110 points. So A's grade goes up (al...

I didn't vote because I couldn't decide how regular is "regular".

Re: Rule 6.8 use of clock

I'm also a "nearly arbiter" (like Sean). My interpretation of this section of the laws is basically the same as Sean, but I also believe that it is quite in order to stop your clock even if your opponent has "got in first" with his move and touched the clock (although he can't stop his clock of cour...

FIDE versus Nigel Short

Congratulations to THE MANAGEMENT for defending Nigel (info from BCM site). This may just bring down FIDE disapproval on the ECF and do us no good in the long run but I (for one) am pleased to see the ECF sticking its head above the parapet and doing the right thing. PS Apologies if this appears twi...

The last one is easy: just add 400 for a win instead of 50. (And you'd need some starting values, of course.) But the argument as to whether the ECF or Elo systens are "working properly" still remains, of course.
