Re: Media comments on chess

There are several references to chess in Raymond Chandler's novels, of course. Here is one: "It was night. I went home and put my old house clothes on and set the chessmen out and mixed a drink and played over another Capablanca. It went forty-nine moves. Beautiful and remorseless chess, almost cree...

Re: The DGT 2500 timer

I think the display always shows hours/ minutes/ seconds left which is a plus over the 2010 and will avoid the occasional mishap where blitz games are set with times in hours and minutes rather than minutes and seconds.

Re: Question about grading submissions

I don't think the ECF does do rating of byes or defaults due to non appearance, so they won't appear on the site?

Re: Barry Sandercock

He was a tough, but friendly opponent. On the grading database my score against him is one draw (at Paignton in 2019) and 2 earlier losses. I also recall playing against him at Hastings in the 1990s and I expect he won those too!

Re: Rules concerning blitz?

7.4 Dispaced pieces: 7.4.1 If a player displaces one or more pieces, he/she shall re-establish the correct position in his/her own time. 7.4.2 If necessary, either the player or his/her opponent shall pause the chessclock and ask for the arbiter’s assistance. 7.4.3 The arbiter may penalise the playe...

Re: Time Control Notation

Any notation has to include the (relatively rare) case of increments only being used in the final period. Perhaps 40/120+0;20/60+0;G/0+30 is sufficiently general to cover all possibilities. If you omit the increment values from the earlier periods then you assume the last increment given applies thr...

Re: Draw Claims - Is This Arbiter's Explanation Correct?

Once, when playing at Hastings I had a draw by repetition claim rejected on similar grounds. This was particularly embarrassing as I am an arbiter! I can't recall which bit of the procedure I omitted, and I agree with Roger but the rules are the rules, I suppose. (I got the draw a couple of moves la...

Re: OtB Returns - Henley edition #1 March 4th-5th

I understand what you are trying to achieve with your event (and why you are doing it) but "Open" is a misnomer for your top event (because it isn't open to all comers). You should really call it something else!

Re: Minimum table space for a board?

From Stewart Reuben's Chess Organisers' Handbook, a copy of which can be found on the ECF website (About Us/ Resources): "The table should have a minimum length of twice the chess board and a width 15-20 cm more than the board. Ideally each game should be played on a separate table about 80cm wide, ...

This reminds me of another case of an ECF director who got himself into hot water by wearing a T-shirt with a political message.

Re: Chess boom?

--- Elsewhere, coming home from a London League Committee meeting at about 10.30pm on Friday night there were some 30 (I assume) students, who'd attracted a small crowd, playing chess on the low wall outside King’s College at Waterloo. It was cold and they were appropriately dressed in hats, coats,...

But FIDE ratings of most U2000 players in England are underestimated because of the relatively small number of FIDE rated tournaments for these playe...
