Re: Membership Renewal

Now that the Direct Debit's by GoCardless have been cancelled, will members wishing to pay by Direct Debit have to set up a new Direct Debit?

Or are the ECF considering reintroducing 3 year memberships?
.........this could be better for ECF future financial planning.

Re: Scarborough Congress

Scarborough Chess Congress 2020 Any updates on if the congress is still planning to run in October 2020? I read on a social media post for the "Vintage Fair" (same weekend as the chess), that the management company for the Spa Complex was planning redundancies. Although there are currently no plans...

Re: Membership Renewal

Online Renewal Last year, if I remember correctly, there were some issues with the online membership process. A lot of members memberships expired, & monies from direct debits were collected late after the start of the new membership year. I think this resulted in some members renewing twice & the ...

Re: Media comments on chess

In The Independent yesterday: A damning article by veteran reporter Carl Bernstein quotes sources describing Trump as “delusional” and jeopardising America’s national security and place on the global stage by surrendering political advantage to Putin, who is likened to “a chess grandmaster” making s...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

On the other hand (from BBC News): Greece has decided to ban all flights from the UK until 15 July, according to Athens News Agency. The current ban was expiring on 1 July but the Greek government has extended it for two more weeks. Crete did do chess tournament's in October, but I have never enter...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

If events are dependent on an individual who decides for whatever reason to give up, then they are at risk, yes, as indeed are clubs in the same scenario I am hoping their will be individuals who will not give up, & also other club members & congress players who will be happy to step in & support c...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I've no idea of the likely timescale for a return, so no longer tempted to speculate. I think though that if a club or congress is genuinely 'well-established' rather than built on sand, then it should have the resilience to return. Obviously there are external factors - however well you run the ch...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Realistically OTB chess returning in this country before later in 2021 is highly unlikely. Sadly, I feel this could be the end for historically well-established chess clubs & congresses. The government guidelines on how we need to socially interact to remain safe, will curtail any gatherings such as...

Re: ECF Finance Meeting

All the above documents are from here , from which we can see there is currently no: Finance Director's Report Budget and Management Accounts Spreadsheet Report by the Director of Membership on Predicted Membership Renewals 2020-21 which I assume will be the more interesting documents. Those are th...

Re: Scarborough Congress

Events at the Spa Complex (Chess Venue) up to October 2020 are being cancelled or postponed. The Vintage Fair which is on Sunday 25th October 2020 (same Sunday as the chess) has not been cancelled as of yet. If The Vintage Fair goes ahead, no doubt there will be limited entry & social distancing. .....

Re: ECF Finance Meeting

the Director of Membership on Predicted Membership Renewals 2020-21. wow if he had e-mailed all he may get a better Prediction. This is why I asked about members definitely planning to renew their memberships on the "Membership Renewal "post. The financial future of the ECF may well be dependent on...

Re: Membership Renewal

League/congress chess is a write off for the duration anyway. The trick is going to be make sure there's something to come back to. Hopefully we will have something to come back to ....but I expect the English / British chess scene will have to reinvent itself. & what this will look like I have no ...

Re: Membership Renewal

I will presume the ECF's staff will come off furlough towards the end of the year, & will need to be paid. & I also make the presumption that most of that money comes from membership fees. Club finances will be all different, but my main concern is that the venues they use ....church halls ....socia...
