How do you make a Grand Master?

I don't know myself, but this is what I can gather from Leonard Barden's posts.

1. Keep him/her interested in Chess by giving them updated gradings on a regular basis.
2. ?
3. ?

Re: Minimum Grades

Who are the muppets on the ECF Board, that just sit around drinking tea and eating cupcakes.

Re: Minimum Grades

The question was 'What will it take'.

If the ECF board have got no future plans to have Monthly Grades, then they need to be removed. End of.......

I do NOT understand all this stagnation when there's work to be done.....going around in circles will NEVER achieve anything.

Re: Minimum Grades

I don't think the issue of result reporting is anything to do with the ECF, actually. When the ECF switched from annual "bundles" to just reporting the results, quite a few graders revolted. One story I'm familiar with is that the Birmingham League Grading Committee resigned en bloc, and the replac...

Re: Minimum Grades

Maybe, I will set up an alternative Grading System. Where all congresses and leagues send me their grading submissions and I update after each event. That's how it should be.

I can't believe the ECF make a pile of money from published Grading Lists.

Yeh, I always knew that there was a lot of revolting graders out there...

Some of them didn't even have a PC...

Re: Minimum Grades

This notwithstanding, if ECF grades were on a rolling, live basis, and incorporated previous grading history as it went, then in the lighthouse men problem, the grades would, too, converge. The second issue is how often you produce a new grading list. Do it live, and it converges. Do it after a yea...

Re: Title norms held by English players

Hi Lawrence,

Could you create a fictitious match between North and South Grand Masters (British) in Rating order.

Qualified Grand Masters only.

Re: Minimum Grades

If you want continuity between grades from one year to the next, then it was a stupid idea. If you want an accurate grading system, it was an improvement. It was thought, rightly or wrongly, that the improvement to the accuracy was necessary in order for the system's credibility to be retained. Wel...

Why are you asking me, ask CCF. They get paid for getting Juniors onto the grading list.

Re: Minimum Grades

I think you'll find I do know how the grading system works So, why are you suggesting that adding 100, 200, or any other arbitrary number to everyone's grade will do anything, without changing the underlying algorithm? Why are you struggling to understand that adding 200 will get rid of all the zer...

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

Not as much info as you wanted but a different picture from the same simul with Kasparov playing Stuart Conquest is on the front cover of a book I have called Kasparov Teaches Chess. The person in your photo above can also be seen on the book from a different angle. I don't think it is the same sim...

Re: Minimum Grades

It is already a fact that grading players out of the grading band 50-250 will create problems in the long term. Now that we are grading players less than 50, we should either add say 100 or possible 200. So, therefore make the grading band 50 to 450, increasing all current grades by 200 I don't thi...
