Re: World Youth Championships

Yet another Rapidplay that could be FIDE-rated that isn't.

Re: Consistency of Tie-Breaking Methods ?

See FIDE Handbook, Standards of Chess Equipment, venue for FIDE Tournaments, rate of play and tie-break regulations: https://handbook.fide.com/files/handbook/C02Standards.pdf Large parts of the document are recommendations posing as "regulations". There are parts that don't make sense to me. For exa...

Re: Gibraltar 2020

However, I suspect that the time is fast approaching when the focus of this thread will switch to the Masters Tournament. Actually, I notice Matthew Carr make a cameo appearance as a player this morning. I am glad the liveboards apparently worked just fine in his absence. It is a pity that despite ...

Earlier today I participated in a conference call to discuss the details of the Player Agreement and of the Regulations.
Does this mean you continue as Chief Arbiter for 2020?

Re: Membership Doppelgangers

It is probably far more likely that they have no idea what their username and/or password is, and so rather than hassle people - even if they know who to hassle - with finding out what it is, they just create a new membership and have done with it. If so, maybe an "if unsure of membership details, ...

Re: If Magnus Carlsen....

Played in the Hastings Congress and had five minutes plus 2 seconds increment for all his games, (no additional time for him at move 40, although opponents get extra time) how do you think he'd get on? :?: A couple of clubs around here ran time handicaps, and actually it seems that time may not mak...

Re: Membership Doppelgangers

I suspect that many of the affected people are either not very computer literate, or don't understand the link between the membership and grading systems, or both. It is probably far more likely that they have no idea what their username and/or password is, and so rather than hassle people - even i...

Re: Submitting events to the FIDE calendar

Do you think you need to get it sorted because the regulations require you to do so, or because you think it would be desirable to help your event attract entries? I've not bothered putting my events there for several years. It's not a requirement of it being FIDE-rated. The latter - for the advert...

I think in certain areas the anti-cheating has gone too far. But if the penalties were lifetime bans that will help.
I am not sure how sentence 1 and sentence 2 are logically consistent, but in any case, CAS don't do lifetime bans so that's never going to happen.

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

If they're away from the board then you wouldn't think anything of it On the contrary, you can be suspicious if your opponent is absent. That's particularly the case at some of the 4NCL venues when there's an area where support teams can lurk. Was that not the problem with the Smart Watch in Telfor...

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

This conversation has made it clear to me that actually, you don't know what these devices are. If I played against you, I could use a smartwatch to cheat quite easily and you'd be none the wiser until you ran the game through Stockfish afterwards. You would be looking at your watch more frequently...

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

. Alex’s point was that sometimes organisers will opt for a solution (not allowing any watches as an alternative to having to check all of them) which allows them to concentrate on other things. It’s hardly an unreasonable position. That's where we disagree. I consider it unreasonable. What is the ...

Re: Tata Steel 10th-28th Jan 2020

I imagined it can run chess programs. I expect so although some need an active mobile phone. If internet enabled, it could also look up the assessment on chessbomb or similar. What was being suggested is that all watches were banned, which I would regard as over the top paranoia. Depending on the m...
