Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Everything we were told about the new legislation last week has to be taken with a pinch of salt because it didn't actually appear until today: presumably the Government's lawyers were putting the finishing touches to it over the weekend. For our purposes the crucial point seems to be that the 6-pe...

Re: On Line Auction today (3rd September)

I wondered what it was that attracted bidders - I couldn't really see the names of the books on the pics!

Re: Armenia v India - Online disconnection dispute

this is a hazard for any online platform - on the Tornelo platform I use, we don't default anyone for disconnecting, but their clock keeps running!

It is usually a local problem, rather than the platform, although Chessdot and lichess do have major crashes occasionally, and service suspensions.

Re: Unexpected chess painting

I like it. I think it is a print, though this is easy for Justin to check especially when you look at the edges of the canvas (assuming it is on canvas). Is it attached on the back with staples? I also think it is an amalgamation of two separate paintings, mainly because of the composition but also ...

Looks like FM Bennett, or someone reproducing his artwork or style. The link below is a painting almost identical to part of the painting posted by Justin. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=42NECXqU&id=B532F0FCB54C2112F6E40090D1CB18EC779C63ED&thid=OIP.42NECXqUwAFLdKs76F7rZwHaFj&...

Re: 19th Century Oil Portrait of World Chess Champion Howard Staunton

I was so excited by this I almost clicked 'buy it now'!

It is a very good portrait, and an almost uniquely appropriate subject that could not have been set up by the painter or an amateur.

If I had the money, I would make them an offer. But it would be a low offer.

Re: Northumberland Chess Congress

I think the issue is that you cannot ignore FIDE regulations, and writing the moves down in advance is forbidden. They have ignored the ECF guidance and FIDE rules but can still apparently grade the event.
