Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

But as suggested, the opinions of the thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions even, who play chess aren't relevant, what matters are the opinions of the voters, less than two hundred, in the actual election. Didn't you explain earlier how the opinions of fifteen thousand English players percolat...

Re: FIDE accounts

David, you are too kind, but doesn't this apply to most politicised organisations ( and which aren't? )? MPs who wish to be ministers, or barristers who wish to be judges, generally temper their behaviour even if they are not natural supporters of the establishment. A few seem to get away with not d...

Re: FIDE accounts

"Malpractice is akmost inevitably overlooked until the money runs out."

I'm sorry if I am the only reader not to understand this gnomic comment, but please humour me. Wouldn't it be overlooked only by those who think they are getting some of the money or benefitting from the malpractice?

Re: FIDE accounts

Notably, not one single EB member felt this was worthy of comment, and they duly voted unanimously to approve the whole thing. Of course, because this is normal for the chess community. Malpractice is akmost inevitably overlooked until the money runs out. I'm not sure what point you're making. The ...

Re: FIDE accounts

The highly entertaining 2013 FIDE Executive Board minutes (link below) indicates that the current President (in election mode and should one choose to believe him of course) has spent US$70 million of his own money over the past 18 years none of which seems to be recorded in the FIDE accounts. He t...

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

No surprise that such an agreement exists, but why put it in a legal document at all, let alone allow it to escape? What is the point of specifying the number of votes to be delivered in a secret ballot? It seems unlikely that, if the votes fail to come through, Leong will give back the $500,000 alr...

Re: Candidates 2014

I can't remember where, but someone said they felt this current WCC cycle was too soon compared to the one just gone. Is that because the previous one was delayed, and if so should this one have been delayed as well? Every two years feels about right. Every year (which is what is feels like here) f...

Re: Seniors

I see that Seniors are exempt from zero time default, which is welcome.

"Default time at the start of all rounds will be 30 minutes." This appears to apply even to the blitz.

but it's not seen that way by the relatively small circles who control the votes on these matters You say this over and over again, and I genuinely have no idea what you mean. Are you talking about a handful of people, or a few dozen, or a few in each federation, therefore maybe a thousand? Please ...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

Well it's good news I think that FIDE have recorded all his games as losses for that tournament and taken 64 Elo points off him. I couldn't agree less. There are so many other ways to punish players, and the rating system is supposed to have something to do with how well you play chess. Giving his ...

Re: ECF and the FIDE Presidential election

Something very similar was on the go in Tallinn, probably no surprise in view of the overlap of personnel. It was top secret, and the QC was not allowed to know about it.

Re: ECF and the FIDE Presidential election

I expect that Kasparov, just like Kirsan, could not resist the temptation to do a bit of meddling in matters of which he has no understanding. The ECF Board have, according to Nigel Short, met with Kasparov on his visit to London for the Chess-in-Schools Conference. As to what they asked him about ...

Re: ECF and the FIDE Presidential election

Something which requires a bit of thought, really. You could instead have FIDE with a CEO who did the legwork, with a President purely for honorary and ceremonial purposes. After all not every country with a President as Head of State makes them their most powerful political figure as well. It seem...

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

There has been a Leong attempt to allow two hour games to be rated, but that was kicked into touch by the PB. Why? It seems odd to me that the FIDE rating list for "standardplay" chess restricts games played under standardplay rules. There are no similar restrictions for rapidplay and blitz. Why sh...
