hi.

Doesn't happen enough but I like this line as black

1.e4 .....e5
2.Nf3.....Nc6
3.Bb5....a6
4.BXc6....dxc6
5.Nxe5....Qg5

White must play Nf3 or he loses the h2 pawn as well
That's not quite right, is it? 6.d4 Qxg2 7.Qf3 also avoids losing a pawn.

The answer is {null} surely, because the office of Prime Minister was instituted post-1707.

Re: Question about arbiters

To be listed as an arbiter in FIDE-rated tournaments, all you need is for your federation to agree that you are qualified to do so - what FIDE refers to as a "National Arbiter" title. For England, this agreement will usually be conditional on passing the ECF or FIDE arbiters' exam. The big thing, wi...

Re: The next world champion?

If I had to make a guess on any one person, I'd pick Vachier-Lagrave, simply because he has a very good chance of being the next challenger. But these sorts of predictions are very hard to make.

Re: Cheating in chess

The point seems to me to be that the big online platforms operate a captive market - the rules of which are pretty much designed to be appear to be watertight. Who has challenged them in a court of law to date? Who is going to do so in future? The Iranian Chess Federation? Nobody much has challenge...

Re: Sniper Available for Hire in 4 NCL

A potentially good idea, if enough people buy into it - a place where organizers can find players, arbiters etc for their tournaments. I don't know how well it'll work in practice.

Re: Trevor Stacey

I don't recall his ever entering Yeovil, but my memory may be failing me.

Sorry to hear this, but not too surprised - he wasn't exactly a young man when I started playing for Wincanton, and that was thirty years ago.

Re: Sniper Available for Hire in 4 NCL

Do you have any idea what the 4NCL market is like?

(Hint: the only teams interested in paying a player £1000/game are those who can attract GMs all the way down.)

Thread merge?
I've sent a message to Carl asking for the Topics to be merged.
I have also asked Carl to move the Michael Steen Birthday from page 2 of Chess History to Birthdays and Anniversaries.
Done. (It's a lot easier for that sort of thing to get done if you use the Report function.)

Re: Constitution for chess club

Sure, but it's a lot of duplicated work - it's a lot easier to make slight adjustments to a template than it is to come up with an entire document from scratch.
