Re: Chess and Pension Fraud - allegation
I always feel that Interpol warrants would be more effective if there was a cash reward for capture - plenty of hard up chess players would suddenly find an enthusiasm for justice if they were being paid for their efforts.

Re: Accusation against Alejandro Ramirez
I think I'll go with "offensive ethnonyms are still bad practice, even if the person being referred to isn't from the ethnicity in question" I never even knew it was an "ethnonym", thought it just meant a slimy liar. You have to be so careful nowadays. I don't even know what this word is, never see...

Re: A.J.Bell Investments and the Chess Advert
From the link I gave above. 'World Chess PLC on Thursday [piece dated 14th Oct 2022] affirmed its intention to float on AIM as it seeks to profit from the growing interest in the chess worldwide. "World Chess is a chess organisation seeking to promote ‘the mass market appeal of chess’ through the c...

Re: World Junior Championships 2023
In a way it is good to not see too many English players, since it is has been a frequent complaint made against the ECF sending players on what effectively amounts to free holidays in the past at least they have shown they are willing to trim the fat and only allow the cream of the crop to represent...

If it were bullet then it might be, but at that time limit Magnus should absolutely smash Nakamura

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
Far too hard, this is what is known as a "cheaters" crossword - unless you are aged 60+ and were a very active player in the Soviet Union there is literally no way you would know 90% of those answers without looking them all up on Google.

Re: Speed Chess Championship 2023
So has always had a bit of a mental block against Magnus, it's like he really doesn't like playing against him and definitely doesn't enjoy the fallout if he pulls off a win (even though the wins he picks up are usually tactical brilliancies)

Re: What have the ECF ever done for us!
I've been saying for many years now that the barrier to entry to any sort of 'organised' chess is too high for a beginner to possibly hope to crack by trying to learn the game on the job - fortunately in recent months there have been such a big influx of such players into the game that it has allowe...

Re: what do you consider as biggest threat to organized chess?
Escalating costs of venues is a huge threat to organised OTB chess. This is exactly what I was going to say - hotels being turned into full time council "housing" and refugee centers make them harder to secure contacts with, cheap little pub/social club/church halls all being run out of business an...

Re: How Come This Player Has Joined English Fed?
All will be pleased to know a club does want me to play for them and I've spoken to them on phone...... Some of my chess playing may depend on funding from my multi millionaire sponsor DEAN STAVELEY... Will the ex Holmfirth multi millionaire (he still has at least one turbine there) provide more fu...

Re: Annoying time wasting
Equally though, people like Fischer are on the other extreme and not typical of even the great chess players. I'd say as far as world champions go theres quite a lot of them who seemed to have a reputation of being unpleasant people - Alekhine, Botvinnik, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, topalov, carlsen...

Since it's only just happened I'll reserve judgement as to how committed he is to being an English player until he's had chance to play some events here, and if he stays on after Putin is deposed.

Re: Annoying time wasting
Ooh, are we besmirching the memory of great players? I heard Bobby Fischer was a touch unfiltered on occasions. It would be quite something if we started a thread "Besmirching the memory of great players" in the obituary section. Any one volunteering? There's a lot of great players who were not gre...

Re: Objection launched (and probably ignored)
I wouldn't worry too much, people make a sport of 'being offended' on the internet regardless of whether they actually care about the issue but there are so many of these screwballs that it is just becoming white noise and easily ignored - one person can never make a difference
