Re: Unfinished Games
We had one in the Gloucester league this year where players adjourned in November and the lower rated player made consistent excuses why he could not play the game (trying to have it adjudicated, to get a draw) , right to the very end of the season where he was eventually defaulted.

Re: Child Genius - the representation of chess
... I would be happy enough just to be a fide master. The joy wears off quite quickly :| I suppose that carrying a title of "master" and still feeling totally outclassed by the upper levels of mastery can be a bit disheartening at times, but at least you get good respect from lower graded players.

Re: Child Genius - the representation of chess
Has anyone ever played Josh? I just had a look at a few of his games, seems to be an ok player for his age but I think more improvement is needed to become a grand master - why do these people set their sights so high I never know, I would be happy enough just to be a fide master.

Re: Northamptonshire Chess Association AGMs
I think it happens that way with many AGM's - those who need to know will always find out, and the rest of the league live in ignorance of the issues being decided on their behalf. It has made me wonder whether doing some sort of online voting system might be an interesting experiment to get more pe...

I always thought it was named after Mr Kiplings cakes - I remember my county matches against Staffordshire featuring a great spread of nice cakes.

Re: Chesstempo, what is it good for?
I don't tend to log in and set myself goals, I just open the site and start doing the tactics training, most are relatively simple and I like to aim for a 90% solving rate. If I am teaching the kids at school I tend to start them off with a difficult composed one to get their brains fired up , and t...

Re: Chesstempo, what is it good for?
Nice one, Jack, I always enjoy seeing a spectacular finish like that to a game. Regarding chesstempo, I would credit it as a major source of my improvement - through doing 20 minutes of quickfire problem solving each break and lunchtime at work I went from being a fairly steady 150 rated player to h...

Re: League Champions!
Players hit the required move number and stop. The game is then taken over by a third party. This forum enjoys comparing Chess with other sports. What other sport has this method of deciding a game. Tag Wresting comes to mind but even then the orginal two players are allowed back into the ring. Box...

Re: Adjudication: another league moves on
So, back to the original topic. Was there much wailing and gnashing of teeth? Usually in leagues there are some stubborn old men who threaten to walk out if they are not allowed to adjourn every game they play - did this happen or was it a relatively peaceful decision?

League Champions!
Hi everybody, some good news for the forum. Last night was the final match of the Gloucestershire league, and it was won by Gloucester, making them the new league champions. I am sure that everybody will join me in wishing my team (and myself) a big congratulations for coming through the season so w...

Re: Adjudication: another league moves on
I don't suppose tracking the 50 moves have been an issue in your game, Jack, since you would have likely had tons of spare time with which to keep score.

Re: Bristol Junior ChessFest
Robert Chandler , Pete Saunders, Chris Beaumont, Geoff Gammon, and everyone else (apologies if I've forgotten anyone) working with the Chess in Schools charity in Bristol deserve a huge amount of praise for the work they've put in and the results that have been forthcoming from their efforts. Equal...

Re: Giver Uppers
I like this system of losing the rating completely if you drop below the "floor", but you are right about the floor being too low now, certainly in the 4ncl you tend not to see many players with fide ratings below 1600 and that is considered on the low side. P.S. Is that 1965 a typo or are you older...

Re: Best Disputes
I like the derivation from the "belt" system best. This could be taken a step forward, perhaps creating a variant of chess boxing, so that everybody was able to at least wear their belt with a measure of confidence that they could back up an argument with the use of force as well as chess skills.. I...
