Re: Chess history trivia

What sort of FIDE Official was he? It's quite tough because the ECF seems to be circumvented here.

Re: Pedants United

I return to the first item mentioned in the Pedant thread: misuse of lie, lay, lying, laying, laid, lain. As though the royals aren't in enough trouble already, here is a remark from 'a female royal' to Meghan: 'Why don't you lay low for a while...?' LIE, please! I think you might be stretching thi...

Re: Pedants United

Not about right or wrong. Never was and never can be given that RP constitutes less than 3% of spoken English.

Re: Pedants United

The BBC made a bit of a thing out of it, much more so than his wife being caught in the act of dodging train fares on her way to court in Luton of all places.

Re: Pedants United

Do you ever read Ammon Shea Paul? I think you would find the following publication interesting on a number of levels. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bad-English-History-Linguistic-Aggravation/dp/0399165584 That does look an interesting book. I see 'potatoe' is among many clippings on the front cover. I f...

Re: Pedants United

I remember in the 1970s working for a classically educated headmaster who complained about the use of 'hopefully' instead of 'I hope that...'. Unfortunately it has now become mainstream. The problem in the above example is that the adverb 'hopefully' is intended to describe the speaker's feelings b...

Re: What was my grade?

Does anyone have lists from 1973 to 1985? If I remember, there were regional union lists back then, so I used to buy the SCCU list, but I am not aware whether there was a national list published, apart from for the top players. For my sins, I think I have still got some SCCU lists from the 1970s/80...

Re: 2021 World Cup

You qualify for the Candidates. Aha, well that is a juicy carrot. I shall have to remind myself not to enter then. Although its true I don't really different from the contestants named in this thread...I mean that like them I'm just another sub-2800 player, it does however, become very tricky indee...

Re: 2021 World Cup

Why would I not like chess played well and broadcast live? I admit to being both English and not as young as I used to be but it doesn't mean I instinctively complain about things...I mean I'm not your average Englishman. More to the point, in the modern game it seems to be either money or entry rou...

I've looked for my grade pre 1994 on the ECF Grading Database but can't find them.
You need the old fashioned version, namely a grading book. I see Joe or perhaps his parents had them archived.
Anyway of making this accessible to others by chance?

Re: Wobbling chess set

FIDE may also need to offer courses on dexterity...more so I mean how to the move pieces individually without brushing other pieces or touching two or more simultaneously. Some of us are a bit rusty when it comes to playing chess without the use of a mouse.
