Re: Chess is another activity the Taliban considers un-Islamic

Leonard, I don't think anybody (certainly not myself) is disputing that chess is booming in Iran NOW........

It certainly wasn't in the 1980-85 period though :)

Re: Chess is another activity the Taliban considers un-Islamic

Matt, If you will read the article, you will find out that it is a supporter of Karzai, who is anti-chess. I don't think there is any evidence of the Taliban persecuting chess players. Quite simply, you are wrong - so wrong that I am frankly mystified where you are getting your information from :? ...

Re: Chess is another activity the Taliban considers un-Islamic

However, it only seems to be the leaders that the West support that actively campaign against the game. Eh? So the West "support" the Taliban then?? :? :?: Yes Sistani said chess was "un-Islamic" - but there has also been no attempt made to actually ban the game in Iraq, nor is there likely to be. ...

Re: Raymondo

Justin and Matt, We all know that Ray has a reputation for dodgy dealing, but what do YOU actually think he has done wrong? Well Matthew, that is the point - the Penguin is slippery as an eel, to mix a metaphor :) He has expensive lawyers too! I got into a tiny bit of bother "in another place" for ...

Yes he is also alleged to have taken £50,000 from his brother-in-law Hmm, it isn't like this is the *only* slightly, erm, "dodgy" thing he is alleged to have done over the years, is it?? I admitted above that whatever else you say about The Penguin, he gets things done - that is fair comment. That...

Re: Raymondo

Didn't know you sold FR books, Geoff :) Like RDK, he did some good (at times *very* good) as well as bad stuff, but that makes the s***e even more glaring and cynical IMO. No I don't buy said books and never have, but the point is that lots of people *did*, and I think there is nothing wrong with wa...

Re: Raymondo

Geoff C, you mentioned his books. This is the heart of the critique of RDK for me, at least.......... In the 1980s and into the 90s he produced some of the most offensively slapdash and shoddy stuff ever to find its way onto the chess market (since the death of F Reinfeld anyway - shame there wasn't...

Re: When is the new grading list coming out?

Right, so now the excitement has settled just a bit.......... I suppose what all the disputes boil down to is whether you think there *has* been grading deflation or not. As somebody who started serious chess in 1981, I have little doubt. Moreover I am not alone - I had a conversation with about hal...

Re: Reporting of 4NCL in the media

Possibly Matt. I can't see how I could have upset any of them personally, but perhaps more likely they range between not understanding my style, and simply not liking it.Probably if I was playing my chess in eg Russia it would be better understood and better appreciated. I think that here they prefer...

Re: Reporting of 4NCL in the media

Good for you Keith - do you think the chess columnists have agreed amongst themselves to gang up on you in some way?

I wonder what you did to upset them
