Re: No news is bad news

You might then see what would be the best structure for it i.e. should it remain a Federation or move to a membership organisation with some form of OMOV Structures are important, I think. If you want people to have power you need to have a structure that lets them have it. On the other hand, you m...

Re: FIDE Rule 10.2 and "by normal means"

It was before my time but I'm told there was a London League Secretary whose normal practice was to respond to all appeals by double-defaulting the players. Is this true, and was that Norman Oliver?

Re: ECF: One member, One Vote

my "bad" Can someone help me out here with a translation? :?: I assume I'm out of touch with modern parlance... I believe, John, that it means "I believe that I was in error" but is intended to communicate more than a suggestion of irony. The young people employ the expression because it is ...

Re: Kramnik 10/1 to win game 7 with White (or even with Black!)

Indeed, the toilet business got reported on the BBC two years ago. As I found out, putting Kramnik in the BBC news search function. I don't think that's just a chess thing, it's a news thing but when it's the difference, not between differnt amounts of coverage, but between coverage and no-coverage,...

Re: ECF: One member, One Vote

Ben: I went to a comprehensive and I value good English as much as anybody who went to a more exclusive school. I'm aware that there's educational snobbery in the world of junior chess (and adult chess too) but do not confuse this with the desire to be able to comprehend what people are writing. To ...

Re: ECF Game Fee v Membership

What was profoundly depressing was while we were, I believe, the first board to ask members “What do you want the ECF to be?” Many council members simply fixed on the membership scheme and asked: How much is it going to cost? And what are the details? Discussions do tend to do this though - the...

Re: ECF: One member, One Vote

Personally I find that the main problem internet player express about club chess (cash aside) is that they think it'll be full of really strong players who'll thrash them every game! I assure them this is not so.... As for less use to a weaker player...I guess I'm sceptical as to the training value ...

Re: ECF: One member, One Vote

Unlike the chap in Changing Places, I have actually read (and seen) Hamlet. Never studied it closely enough, though, obviously. (I did learn to speak the "To be or not to be" soliloquy in forty-five seconds for a party trick at a leaving do once, mind.) Ben, to some degree (and your postings are ver...
